Linked profiles and proxy access
Proxy access allows parents, family members and carers to access health services on behalf of other people. For example, children, dependants you care for, and relatives.
Currently, you can use linked profiles in the NHS App to act on behalf of another person if you meet all of the following conditions:
- you are both registered at the same GP surgery
- you are both patients at a GP surgery that uses either TPP (SystmOnline) or EMIS (Patient Access)
- the GP surgery has registered you for proxy access
Depending on the level of access your surgery gives you, you can switch profiles in the NHS App to act on behalf of another person and:
- book an appointment
- order a repeat prescription
- view their GP health record, where appropriate
GP surgery systems and linked profiles
Surgeries in England use different systems to provide GP online services. Currently, switching to a linked profile in the NHS App is available to patients registered with a GP surgery that uses either:
- TPP (SystmOnline)
- EMIS (Patient Access)
If you're not sure which system your GP surgery uses, ask your surgery.
Adding children, relatives and dependants to your profile
Access is controlled by the GP surgery where the person you wish to act on behalf of is registered. You can ask the person's GP surgery to register you for proxy access. They will guide you through registration.
You'll need to provide identification to the GP surgery so they can:
- confirm who you are
- check you are the correct person to act on the patient's behalf
When the surgery has checked your identity and registered you for proxy access, you'll see a new option in the NHS App called Linked profiles.
Switching to a linked profile
After your GP surgery has registered you for proxy access for one or more people, you can switch to a linked profile in the NHS App. You do not need to log in and out each time.
To act on behalf of another person:
- On the homepage, select Linked profiles.
- On the Linked profiles page, choose the person you want to act on behalf of.
- Switch to their profile.
When you switch to another person's profile, a yellow banner at the top says Acting on behalf of and the patient's name.
Switching back to your profile
When you have finished using services in the NHS App on behalf of another person:
- Select the yellow banner that says Acting on behalf of.
- Select Switch to my profile.
Removing access to your profile
Until a child's 11th birthday, it's usual for the child's parents to control access to the child's medical record and GP online services. However, when the child is aged between 11 and 16, parents may be allowed proxy access to their child's online services after discussion with the GP, where appropriate.
If parents still have access to their child's medical record and online services, access is turned off when the child reaches their 16th birthday.
If you're aged between 11 and 16, and you have questions about who can access your medical record or online services, contact your GP surgery.
