Broadmead Medical Centre - GP Surgery and Walk-In Service

 

GP Surgery

 

Appointments are available for registered patients to see their GP or Practice Nurse from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday.

 

We provide general medical services for patients in the inner city area. People living within the BS1/BS2 and some surrounding areas are able to register with the practice. Check our 'catchment area' tool on our website to see if you live within our practice boundary.

 

Walk-In Service

 

Our walk-in service is for ANY person, whether they are registered with us, another surgery, or not registered anywhere at all. The service is led by our skilled nursing team who are able to see, diagnose and treat most minor illness and injury. The service is accessed via our downstairs reception area. We operate ‘walk in and wait’ clinics (and bookable appointments  (in person) after 4pm) available Mon-Fri.

 

This service is for the treatment of any minor illness or minor injury –including sexual health & emergency contraception, wound management, travel health, smoking cessation and lifestyle management,. 

Areas not covered include chronic disease management, long term conditions & childhood immunisations as these are best managed by your own GP. We will also not issue sick notes or manage repeat prescription requests. Please attend your own registered GP for these things.

 

The walk in service is open from 8am-8pm Monday-Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday. PLEASE NOTE: Due to high patient attendances we close our list at 6.00pm  on Saturday and 3.00pm on Sundays in order for the surgery to adhere to Boots store closing times of 8pm Saturday and 5pm Sunday. We are open on all public holidays except Christmas Day and Easter Sunday.

We ask you to treat our staff courteously, respectfully and without violence or abuse. The practice reserves the right to remove any patient from the premises if unacceptable behaviour is shown towards any staff.

Please note that our opening times on Boxing Day and New Years Day are for the Nurse-Led Walk-In Centre only. The surgery will be closed on these dates for GP services.

Patient Forum

We always want to improve the service that we provide to our patients. We try to do this in a number of ways including our patient forum. Our patient forum happens three times a year and are attended by members of the patient forum and senior staff of the surgery. This includes the practice manager, the assistant practice manager, and members of the clinical team.

The patient forum gives patients who attend the opportunity to discuss the surgery and the service that it is providing. It allows us to learn through patients experiences so we can improve in areas they feel could be improved in. It also allows us to continue to develop areas that patients feel are good about the surgery.  Members can raise any issue they feel is necessary or relevant to the service provided. New ideas develop from the forum, which lead to an improvement in the surgery and service you receive.

Student Services at Broadmead Medical Centre

You will see our stand at the UWE Freshers Fairs at the main Frenchay campus and Bower Aston, every September. We also arrange to come to the various student accommodation blocks around the BS1 area during October to enable you to register. Please ring the surgery for dates and further information. We will also ensure that we advertise our forthcoming visit to your accommodation in plenty of time for you to be aware that we are coming. You wiill need to provide proof of ID, proof of address, eg. tenancy agreement etc. If you are unable to provide address documentation immediately, you can bring this along for us to verify, at your New Patient Check. 

You will also be asked to fill in a confidential medical questionnaire which will be attached to your records. This will allow us to see whether you have any special health care needs.

Guidance for Letters of Extenuating Circumstances Requests

If something major happens to you that you think seriously affects your performance in an assessment or examination (including non-submission), you can ask the Academic Board to consider this as Extenuating Circumstances when they decide your results. They will only do this if you make a submission to them - via the Extenuating Circumstances Panel - in writing.

One reason for making an Exceptional Circumstance application is significant ill health. You will need to support your application with either a Medical Certificate or a letter explaining the nature of your illness. We may be able to countersign a letter supporting your Extenuating Circumstances submission but only if you consulted one of our doctors about the illness within the previous two weeks. Letters regarding illnesses prior to this period cannot be verified by a gp at this Practice except in exceptional circumstances which would need to be discussed with the doctor concerned.

The following information may be helpful when preparing your letter of extenuating circumstances.

Please include the following information in your letter:

  • Your name
  • Date of Birth
  • Bristol Address
  • Telephone Number
  • Department
  • Course
  • Module
  • Year of Course 

 Please give the date and the name of the person who will receive this letter e.g., your tutor. Please give an opening statement along the lines of "This letter is to give you details of why I am seeking your consideration for a period of ill health". State what has been the matter with you giving dates, symptoms, diagnosis and that you have seen the doctor and where and when. Please indicate how the period of ill health has affected your work.

- State how you would like your tutor to help you:

- Maybe thank the tutor and sign the letter.

Please be advised that the doctors will do their very best to get the letter back to you within 48 hours. You may appreciate that this is normally not considered to be urgent and is not NHS work. There is, therefore, a charge associated with this which currently stands at £20.00

Nurse Led Walk In Service comes to Broadmead Medical Centre

This service is for the treatment of any minor illness or minor injury –including sexual health concerns and emergency contraception, also wound management, travel health, smoking cessation and lifestyle management, We can also perform other procedures such as multi-layer bandaging, implant removals and fitting, suturing and clip removals.

 Areas not covered include chronic disease management, long term conditions and childhood immunisations as these are best managed by your own GP. We will also not issue sick notes or manage repeat prescription requests. Please attend your own registered GP for these things.
