  1. Review titled A caring practice

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Ray Srodzinski ¾ - Posted on 15 July 2024

I have been massively impressed by the comprehensive care and attention I have received from the staff at the Deepings Practice, particularly that of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner who has recently procured gastroscopy and endoscopy procedures for me within days of my first appointment. I was extremely anxious about my condition and the possibility of contracting cancer; the opportunity to allay those concerns almost immediately through the vital biopsies is something I appreciate greatly. The lady in question has followed up our meetings and the treatment I have received by solicitous communications via text and phonecalls. In short, she has demonstrated outstanding professional care and reduced my anxiety significantly. Thank you Deeping Practice.

Phone call consultation was very positive and didn’t have to wait too long to speak to someone. They listened to what I needed and gave good advice.

  3. Review titled Shocking lack of care

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 21 June 2024

My small child is currently in hospital with pneumonia. She has lost a lot of weight, had a lot of time off school and is extremely unwell. This could have been avoided if we'd received the correct support via a face to face GP appointment when I first accessed support for her, which would've picked up on her severe chest infection, listlessness, pallor, fatigue and hacking cough. Initially when I first called the practice I had missed the emergency appointments. I was then asked to complete a text message assessment in case the on call doctor had time to call me. I received a blunt text message, one sentence informing me that this case could be assessed by 'Pharmacy First'. I received a call from a pharmacist (really?), answered a few questions, then told to pick up a prescription for penicillin. My child was not seen, her chest not listened to or her presentation assessed. She started the antibiotics but three days later her condition had deteriorated. I called again and was told again there were no appointments and to go to the Urgent Care Centre. I did this, waited for hours with my very poorly child, they assessed her, she had a chest infection and was given a stronger dose of amoxicillin, which they said is usually prescribed over penicillin as it covers more infections. After the course she was no better. I called the practice again at exactly 8am, the lines were engaged, I managed to get through to the queue, only to be cut off after 30 minutes from their end, I called again, got through to the queue, waited ages, all appointments gone, was told to call 111. I did this, 111 sent me back with a referral sent separately them for me to speak to a doctor within an hour because my daughter had chest pains and was breathless. When I called the practice they said they were at capacity and that there was no one to speak to. Finally I took my child to A&E and she is now in HDU on all sorts of treatments including oxygen and steroids. I am disgusted by the policies at this practice, which seem to involve delegating cases on to other health departments so that they don't have to deal with them. There is very little care or concern shown. This week I really considered what the point of registering at a practice is, when one spends hours telephoning but can never access an appointment! What happened to the old system? That seemed to work fine; some appointments were released at 8am, a few emergency appointments were kept aside for the on call doctor, and the triage system worked well. Since COVID everything has changed, they seem to have kept the system they adopted then because of social distancing etc, but I don't understand what has changed at the practice to warrant this. Are there fewer GPs? Fewer appointments? Where do the appointments go? You can never ever get one, not even for an extremely unwell small child! There is no extra provision, some people get ill during the day too, appointments released at 8am are irrelevant!

  4. Review titled Shockingly Poor

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Caron Sloan - Posted on 19 June 2024

Unable to get appointments which is bad enough however, have now lost my medical exemption renewal and refuse to help me. All they say is they have sent it so its not their problem Although they cant tell me when it was sent) Have left me in a position where I have a long term medical condition that I have to either go without presciptions and become ill or pay each month. Never had any issue with previous GP surgeries in the last 25 years but since I moved to this one in November 2023, I have had nothing but issues. I am frantically trying to find another GP who will accept me out of area as the stress this surgery is causing is making me ill.

  5. Review titled Getting appointments near impossible.

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Peter Hawkins - Posted on 04 June 2024

This practice has fallen apart. Used to be easy to get a same day face to face appointment. Now, it’s like winning the lottery. Queued in person today. Was 8 back in the queue. Also phoned and was 19 in that queue. By the time I was seen face to face, I was 14 in the phone queue and hung up. So that’s 8 in person and 5 on the phone. Yet I got the last nurse appointment late in the evening. How can they all have gone so quickly? Who’s booking them? How do people working at 8am, book anything? The only way (so we’re told) to make an appointment is phone at 8am each day or wait outside the surgery. Either there is another path that eats up the appointments quickly that most are unaware of, or a criminally low number available each day. How many appointments are available each day? What is happening to make booking appointments easier? How have things crumbled so badly in the last couple of years?

Dear Mr Hawkins, Thank for your post. Regarding your concerns about the difficulty in securing a same day GP appointment, it is important to note that our appointment system is structured to balance the needs of all our patients. As per communications from the practice in May 2023, we needed to change our appointment system in line with the new GP contract, which focuses on continuity of care and ongoing problems. This means we have less same-day capacity than during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, where virtually everything was a same-day appointment only. It is worth noting that our practice does not operate as an emergency service, however we do offer a number of on-the-day urgent appointments. I am very pleased to read you were given a same day appointment. Kind Regards Claire Deputy Practice Manager The Deepings Practice

  7. Review titled 3 weeks waiting time for a lump under my armpit

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Aarti - Posted on 16 May 2024

I have noticed a lump under my arm pit and considering that I have a family history of breast cancer, I am really worried. I am also doing what is recommended by the NHS to try and see a GP. Called the surgery this mooring and spoke to the receptionist and explained my situation to her. Her response was simply I don't have any appointments today but I will put you on the waiting list and when an appointment becomes available, we will call you to book an appointment. I asked her how long that would be and she said we are looking at 3 weeks at the moment. I explained to her that considering my circumstances, waiting 3 weeks is a long time. She didn't seem to show any concern and simply said, I understand what you are saying, but there is nothing that I can do. I rarely book appointments to see the GP because, I understand the pressure on GPs and surgeries but in the past, whenever, I have needed to do so, I have always been given a telephone appointment on the same day either from the on call GP or a nurse practitioner. Yet, in a situation like this, when I have a serious concern, I am being told I need to wait 3 weeks in order to just book an appointment, not even see the GP. I appreciate the NHS is under a lot of pressure and hence, GP surgeries have standard protocols for booking appointments, but waiting 3 weeks to just to book an appointment for a lump under my armpit is extremely disappointing and very concerning. I know the Deepings Practice have on-call doctors for same day telephone and physical appointments as I have previously been given such an appointment for myself and my children. Hence, considering my situation, I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect the receptionist to try squeeze me in where possible. But there was absolutely no care or compassion from her even though I was in tears and the only replies I got, was that there was nothing she could do. I have the name of the Receptionist if needed. But I think waiting 3 weeks for a serious concern is not really acceptable and I think receptionists who are in the forefront of GP practices, should really have some sense of concern towards patients and willingness to help otherwise, they are in the wrong profession. This is the first review I am leaving of a GP surgery but considering my reason for requesting an appointment and the way in which my call was handled, I feel the GP Practice needs to be made aware.

  8. Review titled Impossible to see a Doctor

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Claire - Posted on 04 June 2024

Having moved to this practice 2 years ago, I’m afraid it’s a totally unacceptable situation with this practice; there is now a waiting list for an appointment and to be on the waiting list I’ve had to explain to the receptionist, who I’m assuming is not medically qualified to determine whether it’s an urgent matter or not, the reasons why I want to see a doctor. Personally, I don’t feel it’s acceptable to have to discuss my personal and private matters to someone who is unqualified to determine the best course of action and secondly, a telephone appointment is useless when I need the doctor to see something; diagnosing over a phone call could obviously lead to incorrect diagnosis or a doctor missing something which they would normally see; this is playing Russian roulette with patients lives. In addition, it took them over 6 weeks to transfer my details over which meant I missed a prescription request which I then had to ask my previous doctor to issue. I should be seeing a neurologist every 6 months and other specialists who deal with my condition but it appears that that’s been overlooked for the past 2 years!! I called on 16 May and was texted an appointment today (4 June) for an appointment on 24 June!!!! I desperately need to move to a competent practice where I can see a doctor as and when I need to abd not 6 weeks later!! Dreadful place! Don’t get me started on the attached pharmacy!

Dear Claire, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Our reception staff work to strict protocols and are trained to ask certain questions to ensure that you receive the most appropriate medical care, from the most appropriate health professional at the most appropriate time. Please be assured receptionists are bound by the same confidentiality rules and clinicians. If patients decline to provide any information at the time of making the appointment, we can add this as a note to the appointment booking to make the clinician aware. We keep a measure of same day, urgent appointments back each day for patients with new, urgent problems, but as you can imagine these fill up quickly, and once we are at capacity with no further on the day appointments to offer, we would signpost patients to the most suitable service based on their symptoms and the urgency they feel they need to be seen. NHS111, urgent treatment centres, minor injuries are services in place for these patients, a pharmacy may also be able to help patients. The on the day urgent appointments are not for ongoing routine conditions. For all patients requiring a routine appointment, we aim to offer these as soon as possible, however we do recognise with current demand the wait is sometimes longer. If we have no appointments to offer at the time of the appointment request, we will put the patient on a waiting list and contact you as soon as we can offer you a suitable appointment, based on your symptoms and any requests you may have. Therefore, with all appointment requests, we will either offer you an appointment, put you on a waitlist or direct you to other more specialist / appropriate services. This is not the platform to discuss personal health concerns, please contact us at LICB.feedback.deepingspractice@nhs.net should you wish to discuss further.
