I have been suffering with tonsillitis for 2 and a half weeks. I saw the practice nurse 10 days into my illness. A throat swab was taken and I was told it would take 48 hours to get results. No medication was given, in spite of me being in pain. I respected this process, even though I was suffering, as I thought it would be two days and then I'd be prescribed something to help me. Since then I have not been able to eat a single solid meal. I have called every day only to be told my results aren't yet back, and that if I wanted an appointment I would need to call back the following day to request one. I called on day 14 of my illness and requested an appointment with the doctor. Instead I received a phone call from the nurse, who told me I couldn't have medication until my results returned, but she agreed to do a reassessment the following day. By then, I hadn't had solid food for 10 days. In desperation I attended an Nhs walk in centre and was given an instant diagnosis of tonsillitis, and was prescribed medication. The nurse who examined me told me she couldn't believe how I had been treated, and how I had endured the pain for as long as I had. I am 3 days into my course of medication and my throat is still oozing pus. I am still unable to eat. I rang to chase my throat swab results, submitted 8 days ago and they still aren't back. No indication when they will be, a refusal to chase the lab and no answers. By Monday, my next opportunity to call it will have been 11 days since the swab was taken and 3 weeks into my illness. To say I am disgusted with the treatment I have received is putting it mildly. I recognise that services are stretched and that Covid is still very much a live issue, but to wait 8 days for results that should take 48 hours is not good enough. No one has been able to offer me an answer or give me any confidence that my concerns are being heard. I have felt ignored and disregarded at every interaction. I have been fobbed off at every pass and I am still unable to eat, 2 weeks on. My energy is consistently low because of the lack of food, and I feel that I have been left to suffer at the hands of this surgery. I don't where I go from here, but if I am still suffering when my medication runs out, I would not trust the surgery to offer the medical care I need because I don't have any faith that they will help me in my recovery.
