Use a condom

If you don’t know someone’s sexual history then always use a condom. Only condoms can provide all-in-one protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

The risk of sexual transmission of hepatitis C in a stable, long-term monogamous relationship is low, and there is no need to change sexual practices. If your partner does have hepatitis C, you should consider getting tested.

If you are planning on going on holiday or travelling, make sure you pack an adequate supply of condoms if you think you may need them. They may not be easily available or of good quality in some countries. Those bought in the UK should carry the British Standards kite mark or European Standards mark. And remember, alcohol can make it easier to forget to practise safer sex.
