Generally, I've had good experiences at my local pharmacy. However, today I received a lecture from the pharmacist when I went to collect my monthly prescription of Letrozole, a hormone suppressant for breast cancer. I've tried several brands of Letrozole and many of them give me bad side effects, including horrible joint pain, so my oncologist had advised me that if one particular brand of Letrozole has less side effects, I should stick with that. There is a note on my prescription requesting this brand, however today I was given an alternative. When I asked to switch for my regular preferred brand, the pharmacist said that it would cost them more money, and asked me why I not prepared to try alternatives. I explained that I had tried alternatives and repeated what my oncologist told me. But she continued to lecture me on the costs to them and told me that in future they may not be able to fulfil my prescription and I'd have to go elsewhere. While I'm somewhat sympathetic of rising costs, which we're all facing, unfortunately this isn't my problem. I experienced no empathy or understanding from this pharmacist and left feeling like I'd been told off. I'd also add that the pharmacist lunch break between 1-2pm is quite convenient. Surely this is a peak time for people who work to pop in and get their prescription. While I understand there must be a pharmacist on duty to dispense, perhaps an earlier or later lunch could be considered, or a split lunch break.

Thank you for your review. While we endeavour to provide all patients with medication branded to their preference, this is not always possible. Unfortunately, the NHS reimburses us a fixed price for all medication. This is not negotiable in most cases. With the cost of medications having gone up and funding to pharmacies down, we simply cannot supply a product which will not be fully reimbursed. Specific brands and manufacturers need to be prescribed properly by the GP first, for us to be able to fill the prescription with specific requirements.
