  1. Review titled Excellent communication from staff

by PRHDaughter - Posted on 14 September 2023

Today I realised my parents were not answering the phone. They are elderly and both have existing health issues. Dad had a fall recently while at a hospital for cataract surgery and ended up in A&E. After several hours ringing them and feeling there was something wrong, I contacted switchboard and the operator was compassionate and caring in manner and looked to see if there had been an admission. She was able to tell me Dad had been admitted and was in A&E at Scarborough. I was put through. The member of staff there who answered the phone was excellent and offered to help me speak to my Mum, who gave me the story about what had happened. Dad has broken ribs, bones in his hand. It feels as though the service, although busy, has been excellent in efficiency and communication skills today. I'd like to express my thanks,

  2. Review titled Treated with such kindness, respect, care and sensitivity

    by capricornuskx58 - Posted on 19 September 2023

My brother died in the emergency assessment unit at Scarborough Hospital. It was sudden and unexpected and he was only in his early thirties. My mum was there when it happened. I arrived shortly afterwards. It was late in the evening. The staff treated me, my mum and my brother with such kindness, respect, care and sensitivity. It can't have been easy for them. I'd like to say thank you.

  3. Review titled The kindness and care shown was exemplary

    by Tilly34 - Posted on 30 August 2023

Last week I visited Scarborough’s Accident and Emergency department to support my niece and her young son who had injured his wrist falling off a slide. He was triaged within half an hour and an x ray ordered for a suspected wrist fracture. I am emailing to say a huge thank you to all the staff that dealt with us through an extremely busy session when the department was full. The kindness and care shown was exemplary and very much appreciated. I also want to thank the very kind member of staff who supported my niece when she became faint and organised immediate blood pressure readings and then brought tea, biscuits and a sandwich! Thank you to the SHO paediatric doctor who was so kind during the examination and also took time to feed back to us after the potting up of the fractured wrist in the early hours of the morning. The only thing to mention is that the staff seemed extremely stretched by the huge volume of patients they were dealing with and I hope that with the new A & E facility opening in Scarborough, staffing ratios will be prioritised to deal with the high needs of the coast.

  4. Review titled Enjoyable Stay

A mighty thanks to everyone who cared for me during my recent stay in Maple Ward. The team of surgeons, doctors, nurses, caterers and cleaners could not have been more caring, cheerful and considerate. The final diagnosis and advice means that I am now back home, comfortable and out of pain. The Kindness of Strangers. Yours gratefully - Kit Sismey

  5. Review titled Fantastic service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Grateful patient. - Posted on 16 July 2023

Arrived early Sunday morning after a fall that was particularly painful internally around my lower back. Fearing damage to internal organs my wife drove me to the A&E Dept. The staff were exceptional. I had morphine for the pain, examination by doctor an MRI scan and they even brought my wife a cup of coffee while she was waiting. I left with a prescription for pain relief medication relieved that there was nothing serious. The staff are wonderful… caring and encouraging. Thanks to every one of you.

  6. Review titled Good efficient service and lovely team

    by Moi82 - Posted on 21 July 2023

Though the team wouldn't have realised, I had huge anxiety about the eye appointment. The last did not go well. I almost fainted! This time I arrived, had the eye test within five minutes, and then I had an eye pressure test, which was much better this time as it was far less invasive. All of this was done within five ten minutes. And then went through to have an eye scan on both eyes. I saw Joe assisted by Heather. They were super-efficient and made it all very effortless and put me at ease throughout. Everything was over and done with in a matter of minutes, could not recommend their support enough. I would even say the efficiency and kindness has possibly helped to undo some of the issues that I faced. Last time meaning next time, I will hopefully be less anxious.

  8. Review titled Unexpected hospital visit

by Tedsgirl - Posted on 03 July 2023

Had to call 999 due to heart problems. The three ambulance crew were really good. Friendly and professional and looked after me with real compassion. Admitted straight to Emergency department, staff there were very efficient and very friendly. Caring and supportive during this time when I felt unwell. All introduced themselves and nothing was too much trouble. Was always treated with respect and dignity and explanation was given about everything they were doing. I was then transferred to EAU and the staff were amazing. Care i was given was excellent, they were kind and helpful and very understanding when I needed support. Cannot fault anyone I came into contact with and the care I received was excellent.

  9. Review titled Hospital stay

    by Frejw66 - Posted on 30 June 2023

While in Chestnut Ward during June 2023 I was impressed by the level of kindness and compassion shown to me by many of the nurses. However, I also felt like I was treated like a lump of meat by one nurse, who, inter alia, left me alone for 20 minutes after administering, without explanation, what transpired to be an enema of some sort. I was then abandoned, very frightened and bewildered as I began to defecate in the bed, not knowing whether this was intentional on the nurse's part or whether or not there was a pad in place. I was terrified. If this is care with kindness and compassion Scarborough style, please let me know.

  10. Review titled Nightmare

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 13 June 2023

Called 111 for the first time in my life in extreme pain. Spoke to doctor who made me appointment at OOH at Scarborough hospital. Got there 5 minutes before appointment. At reception I booked in; giving all details. Was told that the appointment time given was not when I would be seen; I confirmed I understood this. The waiting room was packed. I waited 1.5 hours before politely enquiring about when I might be seen only to be told the receptionist ( who I saw clock off her shift ) had not actually booked me in. The new receptionist apologised and directed me to a different area. Here I spoke to a nurse who seemed to think I was trying to queue jump; I made it clear this was not the case and explained I'd been told to come to that area and that for 1.5 hours I had thought I was moving up the queue. I was told to go back and wait. Which I did. I was finally seen at 3am. I was given a prescription and told to have a blood test but that it would be a further 6 hour wait. I went home without the blood test as by this point I could hardly stand. The NHS is so underfunded, understaffed and overused. I work in the NHS myself in another sector; I get it. But there was no organisation at Scarborough hospital- it was chaos. An elderly woman had been there alone for 12 hours. Parents with small children 9 hours. People who didn't need to be there; swearing and being aggressive. Other people there because they couldn't get a GP appointment. The whole system needs an overhaul; I understand this but there are things Scarborough hospital could do on a local and affordable level that would make the experience easier for patients.
