Having accidentally splashed disinfectant in my eye I was kept waiting 7 hours while other who weren’t in obvious pain or lucky to loose sight were seen. According to receptionist I had waited the longest time that day!

We are sorry to hear that you recently experienced a very long wait at our A&E department. The Emergency Department are currently exploring ways to improve the experience of patients attending and waiting in the department. While we do aim to see patients as quickly as possible and prioritise based on urgency, at very busy times this can mean that some patients experience a long wait, which we are sorry about. In addition to the main A&E department, there is an Emergency Eye Centre on A Floor of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, which may have had a shorter waiting time to be seen. You can find out information about the Emergency Eye Centre [here](https://www.accessable.co.uk/sheffield-teaching-hospitals-nhs-foundation-trust/royal-hallamshire-hospital/access-guides/emergency-eye-centre#80e0fd9d-7df6-674d-af17-28e7dfd8afe1). Once again, we are very sorry to hear about your very long wait, and apologise for this. We hope that you received the care and treatment that you needed despite the long wait. If you wish to follow this up, please contact our PALS team on 0114 271 2400 or by emailing sth.pals@nhs.net. The PALS team will ask you to share some personal details in order for us to investigate this matter for you.

  4. Review titled Torn ligament process

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 26 February 2023

Think a review of potential torn ligaments in A&E needs a review. If i break a bone I get seen right away and sent for a cast. In my case I had two torn ligaments but was told as there was no bone crack on the x ray i had to go through painful physio for 6 months, make the problem worse, only to end up with an MRI in the end anyway. All too often our concerns are dismissed as sprains, even though in my case i have ASD, bad introception yet despite this was in absolute agony. I understand staff are overworked and MRIs take time to arrange, but I would be happy to be sent home right after x ray and told by text to go to physio or MRI rather than sit in the waiting room for 4 hours all to have my concerns dismissed. On one occasion I went in a year after lateral ligament reconstruction and it should have been a safety precaution to just arrange a future MRI to ensure i hadnt torn the same area.

  5. Review titled Excellent

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mike Liddle - Posted on 10 March 2023

Arrived in a+e with a rugby player friend with a badly dislocated shoulder. Was triaged really quickly, nursing staff came out to the car to help him into a wheelchair. Advice was given as to parking as I am not a native of Sheffield. Service was really impressive, I was given regular updates as to where he was in terms of his care and was allowed to visit when the dislocation was stabilised.

I came in on the 11th January 2023 to have toe surgery.came in at 7.00 am to the bev stokes day surgery unit .went to theatre about 12.00pm but in the main theatres and my nurse looked after me really well .my anaesthetist was very nice and put me at ease .i had a general anaesthetic and I had a few problems when I came round in recovery and my anaesthetist was with me all the time and looked after me for about 5 hours then my consultant came to see me and said everything went ok.i was moved on to huntsman 6 where the nurses looked after me very well.i had a a lot of pain in my leg when I let the hospital 2 days later and ended up back in A-E with a possible dvt and was keeper in for 2 days where I was told that they sent swobs of to see if any infection and was started on antibiotics and sent home .week after came back to clinic to have dressing changed and my consultant ended up re admitting me because the infection was bad so was sent on surgical assessment centre and on intravenous antibiotics the moved to huntsman 6 .i was in hospital for 9 days then discharged.i have had a lot of the pain in my leg and the wound is still really red and sore .i think it’s still infected and I need my consultant to keep an eye on this because I had this operation done back in 2021 and I was badly let down by the consultant but it was not this hospital and I cannot thank this consultant for everything he has done and he has looked after me very well.he checked on me a lot while I was in hospital and I could not have met such a nice person.

  7. Review titled Falling off my bicycle

    by Mark234 - Posted on 01 February 2023

I was coming back from the Tigger Tor fell race and as I approached a right hand turn I assume my bicycle slipped and I came off. The next thing I knew I was sitting on the ground with about 4 people round me - an ambulance was called and came quite soon - taking me to Accident and Emergency at the Norther General. The ambulance crew were great - very professional - getting my details, checking my heart etc and giving me some painkillers - they also kept me talking ... which was friendly but also I suspect a good thing to do with someone who has had concussion. At the hospital I was taken through quickly for an initial assessment and X Rays - followed by a scan of my head. I was there for quite a long time (about 5 or 6 hours) frankly, I didn't mind - staff the nurse and the doctor assigned to me were attentive and helpful - clearly carrying multiple case loads. I am now waiting for the results of an assessment of my case from the Fracture Clinic which I have been told I will get tomorrow. My one criticism of A and E that I would like noting is that they handed the job of fitting me with a sling to a junior member of staff - the correct fitting and explaining why it was important did not happen. In retrospect with a collar bone that is snapped and digging into my skin I think this is important and could have been done better - my only criticism.

  8. Review titled Caring

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Albert Geoff Anderson - Posted on 01 April 2023

The doctors, nurses, and back-up staff were caring but efficient. Having sepsis in an ankle, I was in isolation receiving barrier nursing, so maybe that explains an extra level of care? I don't know. Communication with doctors was good. Food was excellent. What can I say? A huge plus is that I never felt I was being kept waiting unreasonably.

  9. Review titled Gold standard treatment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 01 March 2023

I attended Accident and Emergency on 18th December with a suspected broken wrist . The treatment i received was excellent .I was in the Department for 4 hours in total which is very impressive considering the icy weather conditions and the increased workload the staff were dealing with .I would like to thank the two A/E practioners who manipulated my wrist and applied a back slab , their skill and professionalism was very reassuring . The follow up care with the Hand Centre is also to be commended .

I cannot praise enough the staff who looked after me during my recent stay at the Northern General. From the ancillary staff through to the consultants I experienced total professionalism and a feeling of genuine concern for my recovery. The level of detail involved in investigating my condition was impressive and the number of different interventions demonstrated a real determination to produce a lasting cure. Thank you to all the team at the Northern General.
