  1. Review titled Worse than awful

I attended A&E on the recommendation of NHS 111 after not being able to manage my pain with GP prescribed medication. I attended for severe back and abdominal pain with an idea of what the GP suspected the issue to be. My GP also said to go to A&E should my condition worsen as I am at risk of something rupturing. During triage I was asked what my pain was on a scale of 1 to 10 and I said 8. I did not feel like I was being listened to. I had my blood pressure done and was sent back to the waiting room. After 2 or so more hours of sitting on the hard chairs as well as standing whilst being bent double with the pain, I had to knock on the door and practically beg for pain relief with tears running down my face. Pain knocking on a 10 at this point. Not once was I asked if I was okay. A nurse came and administered oral morphine in the waiting room. This didn’t help so an hour later I asked to go home. I needed to be laying down not sat in chairs. I really felt like the staff didn’t care. Just because I wasn’t rolling around in the floor, it doesn’t mean that I’m not in severe pain. As I was leaving I saw two nurses who I’d spoken to on arrival. They could not believe that I was leaving without being seen given they knew how much pain I was in. If I ever need treatment again I would rather drive over an hour to Wythenshawe than be treated at Leighton hospital.

Dear patient, Thank you for your feedback. Please accept my apologies that you felt you were not listened to, on your arrival to the ED. There is a criteria that has to be met to be able to sit a patient back into the waiting room safely. However, I would expect pain control to be given as required and I'm sorry that this was not the case. We have recently made changes to our escalated staffing to support the waiting room with a qualified nurse in times of increased demand, and so I hope this offers some assurance that we take patient's feedback seriously. Kind regards, Kaylie Stone Matron - Emergency Department

Most of the staff didn’t want to be there and were quite happy sat around talking. From 1:30am Sunday till 3:30am Monday I was made to be in a chair never offered food from 3:30 till 7:30am I was moved to a room and given a reclining chair once again never asked if I had eaten. I finally got a bed at 7:30am 30 hours after arriving at a&e and I was finally offered food at 3pm extremely appalled by this treatment

Dear patient, Thank you for your feedback. I apologise for the poor experience in the department and that you waited so long without being offered any diet and fluids. The feedback you provided has been shared with all of the Emergency Department staff who have been reminded of the importance of providing diet and fluids regularly to patients during their care rounds and to ensure professionalism at all times. 3. Review titled Organised, friendly, caring and efficient service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Jordan - Posted on 12 February 2024

Every single time I visit; the care is exemplary. The department is well organised despite being under pressure. Patients are generally seen quickly and the staff remain upbeat, professional and clear. I was not made to feel rushed at any time. The consultants and nurses were very friendly, gave clear advice and referred me to other hospital departments where required for tests / procedures). (In my case the MRI team). I feel lucky to have Leighton hospital as a local hospital and have had excellent service on every occasion. The Opthalmology department was no exception and is a good example of a team providing high levels of care. Thank you.

The nurse and doctor in dermatology were excellent listening to me and taking time to check all my skin problems. I can’t praise them enough.

Many thanks to all staff who attended to me after a bad car accident. Despite a busy time of year and during the junior doctor strikes, I was triaged and seen and assessed for injuries/concussion, then discharged very quickly and now recovering well. Thank you to the whole department.

  6. Review titled NHS at its best.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by David - Posted on 14 January 2024

Arrived at Leighton hospital in a lot of discomfort ( renal colic). Triaged efficiently within minutes and taken through to A&E unit. Seen immediately by Dr and basic obs and bloods performed . Very impressive. Then taken to a bay and looked after by 2 nurses with excellent communication skills and empathy. They sorted analgesia and antiemetic immediately. Within the hour of arriving I was greeted by an efficient, friendly and courteous radiographer who explained the procedure and I was CT scanned to diagnose the problem. All through this process I was accompanied by the same nurse for continuity. So, touch down to diagnosis by scan and bloods and assessment took less than 2 hours! Amazing. A particular thank you to the hard working, kind and reassuring nurses and doctors who looked after me. Thank you so much. And to the staff who kept the area spotlessly clean. The unit was pristine. Well done all.

  7. Review titled Excellent care during a difficult childbirth

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mark Stephens - Posted on 07 March 2024

Briefly my daughter was admitted with high blood pressure / pre-eclampsia and was complicated by the 'hellp' syndrome (no capitals allowed) which is potentially very serious life threatening condition). Prompt identification and action which is the treatment of choice ie urgent delivery of the baby by emergency Caesarean section in this case. with monitoring during and following to chart recovery. The outcome has resulted in a full recovered mother and healthy baby. Full marks to the Leighton team.

  8. Review titled Excellent treatment and care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

After a slip on some ice at work, I was taken via Ambulance to A&e….with a suspected broken ankle and in some considerable pain! (Although the gas and air did help :-) I was looked after so well by A&e Minors and seen very quickly by the on call orthopaedic team. X-ray confirmed broken ankle and I would be needing surgery, I was told I would be transferred to Ward 12 (orthopaedic care) as soon as a bed was available. Although I had to wait in the corridor Pod system for a while, the staff there worked so hard looking after all the patients waiting for a bed on a ward. My pain was managed by the nurses and they were constantly checking on patients to see they were ok. After arriving on ward 12 about 12.30am, the staff there were so nice. I know we had to go over admission paperwork and this was night time, the Nurse did that with such care and awareness, he kept the lights and his voice low so as not to disturb other sleeping patients. Having a broken ankle and in a temporary cast, I was unable to use the bathroom myself, so had to rely on the nurses to help with ‘bed pan’. After my initial ‘inward concern’ as they were all male nurses, this was quickly put aside. All of the nurses, majority being male, attended to me with such care, empathy and treated me with respect, assisting in my dignity! Thank you !! The next morning my case was discussed with the orthopaedic surgery team and the surgeon came to advise I would be having surgery that day. Absolute fantastic care by all! Following my surgery, plates and screws included, I was back on ward 12. All the nurses on there work so hard for all the patients and I wanted to thank all who looked after me! I made best use of my time (6 days) by getting to know some patients and the nurses, and more often than not, having such a good giggle with some….I cannot name names on here, but you know who you are ;-) - I thank you! It made a very traumatic experience copeable, I just wish I could have brought you home with me. I wanted also to provide an update to ward 12…. I am now out of my cast and slowly weight bearing, making friends with my boot and crutches, and hopefully on the road to recovery. I salute you all! xxx

  9. Review titled Lovely staff doing the best they can.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Zane - Posted on 20 December 2023

I was sent to Sdec today by my GP after coughing up blood for a week and spent around 6 hours there. The nurses got all the bases covered as quickly as they could, including getting a X-ray within an hour of arriving. They were all friendly, empathetic and attentive. I noticed they helped every patient on the ward however they could. They communicated any change and made sure everyone on the ward had their needs met. The ward was also very clean. The doctor I saw and ENT doctor were also as helpful as they could be and explained everything to me, along with fully checking my file and doing a thorough investigation. The only negative was the long waits for doctors, but that's unavoidable with the NHS stretched as it is. I'm incredibly grateful for all of the help I received in finding out why I'm Ill. It was inconclusive but they left no stone unturned and ensured every major issue was checked and ruled out for my safety, along with moving forward an ENT appointment and arranging a scan to rule out any more serious concerns. I have nothing but gratitude for the care I received there today. I hope all of them have a good christmas, new years and are given time to rest given how hard they all work.
