My dad had been unwell since 9th December and had told everyone to stay away as he had 'a very bad virus', he is 80. Before Xmas I tried to convince him to come to my house for the festivities and he sounded very weak and said he was still ill and didn't want us to catch it. I told him he needed to make an appointment to see the GP which he did on 23rd December. He was offered some indigestion medication and sent on his way. On 30th December I became extremely concerned and drove the hour to see him. I was aghast at how thin and yellow he looked and we immediately got on the phone to make an appt at your centre. When we were called in we were told by the hcp that she was 'the Practitioner'. Now being a nurse myself I knew she wasn't a Gp but my dad was convinced she was. This should be made clear to patients, we may be excellent at our job but we are not doctors! The practitioner looked at my dad who was clearly in distress, frail and confused and said 'you were here for the same complaint on 23rd, what do you expect me to do?' Knowing my dad, if I hadn't been there he would have felt like he was being a nuisance and left. In the end it was all she could do to take his BP (156/106), pulse and temp but not his blood glucose despite him being a nidd and not eating or keeping his meds down for 3 weeks! I took him to the Darent Valley A&E dept because she said it was closer and he was admitted to resus in dka straight after being triaged. He was seriously unwell and he has since been diagnosed with cancer of the head of pancreas. I understand the pressure staff are under but the surgery waiting room only had 3 patients. I am not sure that training can do much about a persons bedside manner so to speak but the impact of a professional speaking to a sick elderly person as if they are wasting their time could have had serious consequences. We were advised if he hadn't presented that day he may have gone into a diabetic coma. I have been a Nurse myself for many years and am left reeling by this person and want her to accept that this is neither a professional or humane way to treat patients and do better.
