  1. Review titled Massively Oversubscribed

Rated 1 star out of 5

The practice is so oversubscribed for the funding and staff they have that even ringing as soon as the phone lines open I was told there weren't any appointments availble for 6 weeks. Similarly, the phone lines are often so busy first thing in the morning that it usually takes over half an hour to even get into the phone queue (which then often lasts another half hour or more).

  2. Review titled Very helpful and knowledgeable

    by Lucy827 - Posted on 15 December 2023

I received an unexpected telephone call from the pharmacist at Porter Brook Medical Centre. I don't want to divulge my conditions, but she was so empathetic and recommended an alternative to 2 lots of tablets I couldn't take because of side effects. I also wanted to reduce the strength of painkillers, and she told me she can do that. The next day my prescription was ready at the chemist. I'm so impressed by this lady, very helpful and knowledgeable. Overall a great telephone conversation.

  3. Review titled Frustrating service

Rated 2 stars out of 5

When you try to book an appointment you have to wait about half an hour for reception to answer the call. You have to book weeks in advance - I have only managed to get telephone appointments - for the telephone appointments they don't give you a specific time so you have to have a whole afternoon free so you can take the call somewhere private. When you get your prescription they only give you one month's worth - even for contraception. If you send them a message on the app when you request your next prescription asking them to increase the quantity they ignore it. It probably works out cheaper to use an online doctor who will issue a bigger quantity rather than paying a lot every month. When you do speak to a clinician they are rushed and you feel like you are a chore.

  4. Review titled Extremely poorly managed practice, great staff

Rated 1 star out of 5

Such hard work to get an appointment here. When phoning you first here a 2 minute pre-recorded message which repeats some details twice (e.g. that your call might be recorded) before you can attempt to join the call queue. If the queue is too long the phone just hangs up on you. The practice quotes in their responses to other reviews that it takes an average of 30+minutes to get through to a receptionist on a busy day, this is not acceptable. This genuinely stops patients seeking help from their GP and is pushing them to either self treat things where not appropriate or to unnecessarily burden other parts of the NHS by going to A&E/Walk-in centre with flare ups of ongoing conditions that need a longer term treatment plan. When i've managed to see a doctor, nurse or midwife they have always been excellent but the management of this practice is appalling, is contributing towards patient's health declining and is pushing people to use other parts of the NHS when inappropriate.

  5. Review titled Great patient contact.

I had an appointment with a specific doctor and nurse and I just wanted to leave a review on how incredible they both were. I went in there expecting on type of appointment and received another and I was completely taken care of, constantly reassured, made to laugh and felt completely at ease. If I could name these two individuals I would as they deserve a whole load of praise but given how hard it is within the NHS at the moment, these two really embodied the perfect doctor and nurse. It’s great to know I’m at a practise with these type of staff.

  6. Review titled Awful

Rated 1 star out of 5

Since moving to Sheffield as a student in 2018 this was my GP practice. Initially, it was a positive experience however in the last few years it has been horrific. It's almost impossible to get an appointment, I called up in July to arrange an appointment to be told the next available one was 31st August!!! And this was for a telephone consultation. I have since changed GPs and arranged an appointment and was seen the same week. I found the GPs here to be extremely rude and uncaring, it felt as if appointments were a chore. I had a telephone review appointment scheduled, after a face to face appointment about a health issue, and to discuss how I'd got on. My symptoms were significantly worse. I just missed the call, and called reception to see if they'd ring back. Was told they'd ring back, when they did about 5 hours later but when the GP called me, she was extremely dismissive as if she didn't know why calling, snapped at meand said she'd had a long day as she'd had a house visit. I was in significant distress with my symptoms which were left unmanaged and uncontrolled. Also was told by one GP, I could possibly have cancer which caused further extreme distress, lots of appointments, blood tests and scans to be told it was something I was born with.

  7. Review titled Incorrect prescription

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Mary Heyler - Posted on 14 March 2023

I was prescribed a medication for stomach acid by a GP in the practice. Instructions were 2 tablets per day for one month and one tablet per day for the second month. This should amount to 84 tablets but I was only given one box of 28. When I complained I was then issued another prescription of 28 tablets!!!!! This is still not enough. Is the pharmacist not able to count???? Very worrying for those who may have more serious conditions. This lack of detail is completely unprofessional.

Shocking service, wait months for an appointment. Lost 2 separate samples Used to be a decent practice but gone down the pan. Recently registered with another practice, Dore Surgery. Best thing I ever did.

  9. Review titled Appalling lack of prevention

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 22 February 2023

I am 68 years old and recently bereaved. It is well known that older people’s health suffers after bereavement. I have not had my blood pressure checked for years. When I was dropping off a test at the surgery I asked if I could use the self serve blood pressure machine in the waiting room. The receptionist told me that I cannot use it without a note from a GP or nurse. The appointment to get this note from a nurse would take three weeks!!!! That is so weird as the machine was right there ready to go. Staff also questioned in a rude tone of voice why I thought I needed a check! As high blood pressure is known as the ‘silent killer’ I would have thought Porter Brook Medical Centre would make every effort to support people with disease prevention. It is no wonder you can’t get an appointment if the surgery is fire fighting all the time due to a lack of access to basic prevention measures.

  10. Review titled Unable to get through

    by Shelb22 - Posted on 12 December 2022

Since Monday I’ve been trying to get an emergency appointment. I quite clearly have some form of infection and it is getting worse. I’ve tried ringing every morning to get an automated message saying there are too many people waiting and to ring again later. When I ring later I can’t have an appointment until days later when I’m the meantime I’m getting more Ill. This is with 111 sending the doctors a note to say I need to be seen within 48 hours from their triage and 111 refusing to assist because my doctors must. I’m now on day 6 of being ill with no signs of it getting better and I’m sure it’s just antibiotics I need.
