Review titled Awful Receptionists
by Anonymous - Posted on 23 May 2025
Myself and my husband are unfortunately registered at this practice and have had bad experiences every single time we have to contact them - the receptionists are the rudest people I have come across in the NHS - most recently I have contacted my GP about a very abnormal heart rate and was told to go and get this checked by a pharmacy which I did - the pharmacist referred back to my GP to send a referral to a cardiologist as they were concerned it was high - this was a week ago - I have tried numerous days to get an appointment and explained twice on ‘contact a clinician’ form that I start work at 8 so cannot stand outside the practice and I don’t want an appointment I just need the referral sent - the only response has been ‘ring at 8 for an appointment’ and if you ring any other time you are greeting by receptionists that sound like they despise their jobs and anyone who calls - a week later and just crossing my fingers I don’t drop dead from a heart attack

Dear Patient, I am genuinely sorry that you appear to have had bad experiences when contacting the practice. I am unable to comment on the specifics of your medical concerns, and therefore I would urge you to contact the practice on ddicb.parkfarmmedical@nhs.net for my attention. I am extremely sorry if there have been any issues relating to rude and unhelpful receptionists and would urge you to contact me via the email above so that I can investigate this. I am aware that many patients are frustrated with the system whereby GP appointments become available as the practice opens at 8am. This is the same frustration shared by patients across the country due to issues with funding, a significant increase in demand, and the available appointment capacity of GP surgeries. We would love to offer patients the option of calling later in the day, or at any time they choose during the day, to book a GP appointment. However, if we release appointments as soon as they are added to the system, then we would have no appointments available for many weeks. There must be a consistent system that gives everyone the same opportunity to access an appointment each day. This system then re-sets at the start of each day. Our capacity (the number of GP appointments we are physically able to offer), does not always meet the demand. We do not have the funding, the room space, or the available GPs to provide the number of GP appointments needed. However, I maintain that we are a good practice, with good appointment availability. Generally, you can call between 8am – 9am and we will often have urgent GP appointments for the same day, or routine appointments for the following 7 days. We realise that this is not always the case, especially if there is a GP absence or particularly high patient demand. However, the further from 8am that you contact the practice, then the likelihood of obtaining an appointment that day is reduced. We have a telephone call-back system, so that you do not need to stay on the phone whilst waiting in the queue. Patients also have the option to contact the practice via the website, or in person at either surgery. I can confirm that we have more GP appointments and more nurse appointments than ever before, in addition to appointments with pharmacists, physiotherapists and social prescribers. We also have additional GP appointments at the Derby Urgent Treatment Centre (these are standard GP appointments with designated time slots). However, the patient demand is far greater than it has ever been, and we are somewhat restricted due to the lack of available room space at both surgeries. We are actively working on an online system to ensure that each patient is seen by the appropriate clinician as efficiently (and safely) as possible. It is expected that this system will have an extremely positive impact on access to appointments, and we're hoping that this will be in place by the end of 2025. Kind Regards, Simon Jones Practice Manager

Needed painkillers desperately today. Receptionist said they would send request to GP but may not be done until tomorrow. Happily for me they have sent it same day. Thank you so much.

Review titled Lovely practice
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Amelia - Posted on 04 June 2024
Although I have never needed an appointment (luckily) since becoming a patient here a few months ago, I have had frequent contact due to prescriptions and other contact with receptionists both in person and on the phone. I have only positive things to say about every contact I have had. I really hope my thanks will get passed on as I know that it is quite a thankless job but I really do appreciate the help and respect I have been shown - this also extends to the surgery pharmacist. My experience has been night and day with my previous GP surgery and I cannot recommend this practice enough.

Dear Amelia, Thank you for your feedback. This is very much appreciated and has been shared with the practice team. We have a huge amount of prescription requests each day and we really try our hardest to deal with them as efficiently as possible, whilst keeping our processes completely safe. I'm very glad that your experiences with the practice have been positive. This is great to hear. Kind Regards, Simon Jones Practice Manager

Review titled Terrible experience

I have contacted the surgery after missing 1 telephone call for my telephone appointment. I was greeted by a very rude and abrupt receptionist who told me I wouldn't be able to speak with the doctor as I missed the phone call. I was met with comments like "well I don't know how many times the doctor has called you" which has made me feel undermined and came across as though I was being untruthful. I then asked to speak to the practice manager and was told that this was not possible. Absolutely disgusting attitude from the receptionist. Would benefit from some training on how to speak to people with respect and compassion.

Dear Patient, I am very sorry to hear that you felt as though the receptionist was rude and abrupt. I am certainly willing to investigate this further if you're able to contact the practice on ddicb.parkfarmmedical@nhs.net for my attention. I am always happy to speak with patients regarding practice feedback. The reception team should typically ask that this is requested via email or in writing since I work across both sites and can often be in various meetings or consultations throughout the week. Regarding the missed telephone appointment, the clinicians will usually try to contact patients at least twice at different times before asking patients to rearrange an appointment. I am sorry if this was not the case on this occasion. This issue has been discussed with the clinical team in recent meetings. Kind Regards, Simon Jones Practice Manager

Review titled Wasting resources
Rated 2 stars out of 5

My twins were both issued with a medical letter upon their discharge from the NICU. They were both mainly on breast milk so the doctor only prescribed the formula to one twin and said to call the reception if I needed it increasing/second twin prescribing. They have both been having formula at night time so I called up and the receptionist refused to pass any message across and said I had to come in, my pram doesn’t even fit through their door (inaccessible) and I have no one to watch one of my babies so that isn’t an option. Instead I have had to waste the NHS resources and have a phone appointment for two days time for something that will be resolved in seconds! I know they have processes but the letter has already been given to the doctors for both twins so a little common sense would help in some cases!

Thank you for highlighting your recent experience with the practice. We listen to all feedback and take on board what patients say about the practice. The practice has many processes in place to ensure the care that we provide our patients is safe and effective. This is especially evident when it comes to prescription requests. It appears that in this specific situation there may have been options available to prescribe the formula without the need for an appointment with a GP. If this was the case, then I am extremely sorry for the unnecessary inconvenience that this may have caused. This would certainly not have been the intention. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the specifics of this feedback without further information. I would encourage you to contact the practice on ddicb.parkfarmmedical@nhs.net if you would like to discuss this incident in more detail. Many thanks, Simon Jones Practice Manager
