  1. Review titled Do not listen and a waste of time

Rated 1 star out of 5

Had a number of appointments for an ongoing issue and within a follow up an emphasis was placed on contraception (this is very far from what the appointment was supposed to be for). After explaining my reasoning for not wanting contraception I felt as though I was being coerced and scared into having some form of contraception and I feel as though they treated me like a misinformed teenager as opposed to a rather well informed adult. I have witnessed many failings during my visits to this surgery including other dissatisfied and distresses patients. You are not listened to and your notes will often be recorded incorrectly due to this. A complete waste of time.

My wife has an ongoing abdominal issue, recent procedures at trelisk. Left with no back up care, spent last weekend with visit to barncoose in extreme pain almost admitted. Was told to get in touch with own doctor. Came home with pain relief and antibiotics. 5 days later cannot speak to doctor, was told she can have a telephone interview in 6 weeks. That was later withdrawn. Still in pain and cannot even talk to a doctor. Has to go back and present herself to a+e. Has been totally let down by carn to coast.

  3. Review titled You are better off seeing Dr Google

Terrible practice sent in a request for medication for a symptom I was suffering severe pain caused by gout. I sent in a request by email as I had previously been prescribed for this condition. 5 days later I received a email from them saying I have got to complete a clinic form online so it can be assessed. By this time I had suffered for 5 days with no medication other than paracetamol. Now looking to switch to another practice as carn2coast are just incompetent

Dear patient, Thank you for your feedback. We apologise that our GP felt it necessary to make further enquiries of you before assuming clinical responsibility for prescribing, bearing in mind the known complications that can arise with Naproxen. I am sure that one of our GP’s would be able to explain more fully if you were to identify yourself to our patient advice and liaison team (c2c.PALS@nhs.net). We do appreciate that, although we responded within three business days, this caused a delay in your receiving medication which you had previously found to relieve your condition. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee to be in a position to issue medications ‘on demand’. Yours sincerely, Stephen Holby Managing Partner

  5. Review titled Useless

Rated 1 star out of 5

I expressed concerns about side effects from a new medication, and asked for advice on whether to stop taking it. I told them I was unable to get an appointment with the prescribing psychiatrist for over a week. After giving heart rate data from before and after starting the medication over the phone, which showed an almost 50% increase in resting heart rate, I was told a GP would call me to advise. I later received a text telling me an increase in heart rate is a common side effect and to go to A&E if I felt chest pain. That information is listed on the NHS website, I was looking for specific advice given the amount my heart rate had increased by. Total waste of time and tax payer money.

Dear Patient, We are sorry that you regard our service as ‘useless’. Thank you for your feedback and for remaining anonymous, as this allows us to comment more specifically without breaching patient confidentiality. When you go to a private service prescribing drugs outside the NHS, it is appropriate for that prescriber to advise you with regard to the side effects of the medications they have given you rather than expecting the NHS to compensate for deficiencies in their service. Nevertheless, our doctor tried calling you twice in response to your query before texting with entirely appropriate advice and advising you to contact the prescriber. Yours ever, Stephen Holby Managing Partner for the Partners Carn to Coast Health Centres

  6. Review titled Anti patient

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Ken Wilkins - Posted on 23 November 2023

In accordance with publicised advice I asked for a psa test as I am a 64 Yr old man. I had to do a lengthy online referral and then received a reply saying a gp would ring me 7 weeks hence. I know this a routine thing but 7 weeks? When the gp rang it was not at the time and date stated so I could easily have missed it. He then went to a lot of effort to talk me out of having a test but finally agreed. I also pointed out that 7 weeks was way too long even for a routine call and he just moaned at me that he was having to work on his birthday. Whilst he had eventually agreed to my having a psa test he then told me there were no appointments for blood tests at the surgery for a long time so I've had to do a 40 mile round trip to get one done. We have been with the surgery for 30 years and have watched it degenerate from a decent service to one of pretty hopeless ineptitude where the patient is considered last. My reasons for saying this are not just confined to the above. We have also experienced wrong diagnosis, excessive waiting times and a failure to refer my wife in a timely manner for an urgently required examination. Everything with this practice seems to put the patient last. Truly an awful surgery

Dear Mr. Wilkins, Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry that you consider us as ‘anti-patient. This is certainly not the case. There is insufficient space allowed on the review site for us to respond to all your points in detail so we shall be writing to you while commenting here in brief. With regard to your request for PSA testing 'in accordance with published advice' the NICE guidelines recommend against this because the test ‘is neither sensitive nor specific for this purpose’ and ‘would generate too many false positives and false negatives resulting in potential unnecessary and invasive tests and/or unnecessary treatment.’ This was explained to you as it would be unethical of our doctors to proceed with tests without making this clear to the patient requesting them. We are sorry that you view this negatively. We apologise for the long wait to discuss your request and for our GP’s attempt to reduce that wait by phoning you early when a cancellation occurred. We are saddened that you should consider the deterioration in NHS services to be due to the ‘ineptitude’ of those providing them. This is not the view of the Health Select Committee whose conclusions we shall share with you. Unfortunately services are likely to continue to degenerate as long as that perception remains. We will also share the rationale for blood tests being offered outside surgeries to cope with demand as is the case in much of the UK. Yours truly, Stephen Holby Managing Partner

  7. Review titled Appointment wait

Rated 1 star out of 5

Have tried to make an appointment was told I would have to wait for 2 weeks! When I said I was struggling to work because of the pain I was in was told to go to minor injuries if I couldn't wait 2 weeks On the website states, an appointment would be made for you in person or on the phone within 'a few days' They were not interested in how much pain I am in

Dear patient, Thank you for submitting your review and I am sorry that the advice given to you has left you with the impression that we were 'not interested' in how much pain you were in. As you have remained anonymous, we are not presently in a position to listen to the recording of any calls but it seems likely that there has been some miscommunication which the following may help to address. I believe that, in response to your report of acute pain and the difficulty of responding to this more quickly within the practice, our staff member was recommending that you attend a centre intended specifically to cater for such situations. Here is why I believe this:- In recognition that GP surgeries in a deprived area like Camborne-Redruth have difficulty in meeting the demand for those wishing to see a GP urgently, the NHS commissioned a ‘Primary Care Centre’ (‘PCC’) as an additional resource for all the local (Kerrier) practices; the PCC acts as a ‘walk-in’ centre (a service which has never been included in the core services provided by GP practices). Although co-housed with the Minor Injuries Unit at Camborne Redruth Community Hospital, the PCC is run by Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. It is not a hospital service but is staffed by GP’s. We as a Practice try to work closely with the PCC and integrate what we do so as to provide a seamless service for patients. ( Because other areas in Cornwall are increasingly coming up against pressures comparable to those we have experienced locally, we are hearing of plans under consideration to extend the use of ‘overflow hubs’ to prevent GP’s becoming more completely overwhelmed in the face of shortages of staff and other resources.) We are conscious that arrangements such as those described above may lead to misunderstandings, especially as our PCC is housed at the community hospital and may be barely distinguishable from the Minor Injuries Unit with which it is co-located. Our staff are trained and encouraged to give an appropriate account of the true situation to patients but it seems that this cannot have happened on this occasion. If you would care to contact our Patient Advice team ( at c2c.pals@nhs.net ) with the necessary details, we can review the call for validation and training purposes and respond more specifically). With best wishes, Stephen Holby Managing Partner Carn to Coast Health Centres

  10. Review titled Fantastic surgery

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I cannot express my gratitude enough for carn to coast. After a previous negative experience with my young daughter elsewhere, my daughter was left terrified of the doctors and would refuse to be anywhere near one. However, thanks to the many clinicians who have dealt with her and cared for her since, they have helped my terrified toddler turn into a happy and excited child who is now happy to see a doctor and gets excited play or draw with them. I cannot thank everyone here enough for their patience, understanding and empathy towards us. It really hasn't gone unnoticed and I will always be extremely grateful to everyone for this and the amazing staff.
