  1. Review titled A Disappointed Patient

Rated 2 stars out of 5

    by Abena Appiah-Kerr - Posted on 16 July 2023

I needed to get blood tests done - medical check for a teaching role secured abroad. The receptionist tried as she did, could not clarify what the process required was, as she went back and forth to speak to someone to the side who seemed to know a bit more and eventually came to speak to me in person. I left somewhat confused and would have liked to have been able to look up what they were saying to me but I was told this was not available. In the current time of technology, it may be a good idea for patients to be able to send things through electronically rather than being sent away and told to bring a physical copy of documentation the following day, adding on to the time that was already limited. I was told I will receive a call from someone to get an appointment booked when I handed in the document the next day. I waited for 8 days and called in after not hearing from anyone, I was told I will be called the following day but still nothing happened. Hence, I called 7 days later meaning I had had to wait 2 weeks just to find out about getting an appointment which I did not need because all I needed, from the get go was to pick up a form from the surgery to get the blood tests done. Following on from my second phone call, I got a call from a doctor within about half an hour after I had made it clear that I will be writing a negative review. This doctor explained about leaving the blood test referral sheet at the desk for me and that one of the tests needed to be done privately. I very rarely go to my GP, I find the times I do go there to be OK but this would have to be the most dissatisfied I have been since being with this practice through all the changes over the years, from when I registered in 1992! I am usually one who likes to compliment when I receive good quality service instead of complaining. I had to put in this particular review of negativeness because I feel strongly about my experience, something needs to be added in whether specific to my enquiry or in general whereby patients can read up on what they need if they wish to do so and/or make contact electronically in line with the level of technology in today's world. Looking at the last inspection report from 2016, one of the recommendations was for reception staff to know the protocol of patients needs (something to that effect). Yesterday, I had the blood tests done privately with a difference of £30 that I was happy to pay to avoid any more delays in getting the medical check process done. I am happy to give more details on what happened if this helps other patients receive a more effective and efficient service which in this case is easily doable by an NHS practice, regardless of serving an area outlined in the 2016 report as being deprived. Thank you.

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing in response to your recent communication regarding a miscommunication from our staff and your request for a blood test required for working abroad. Firstly, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience or confusion caused by the miscommunication from our staff. Regarding your request for a blood test required for working abroad, we understand the significance of this matter and would like to clarify the appropriate procedure. While we do provide blood testing services through the National Health Service (NHS), it is important to note that blood tests required for occupational purposes, including those needed for working abroad, are typically conducted privately. This applies to doctors and nurses and charity workers wanting to work abroad. Typically these are done by travel clinics. We understand that navigating through this process can be overwhelming, and we are committed to assisting our patients in the best way possible. We recommend that patients consult with a private healthcare provider who specializes in occupational health and can guide through the required blood testing process for working abroad. They will be able to provide patients with the necessary information, schedule the blood test, and issue the appropriate certification upon completion. If you require any further assistance or clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the surgery. We are here to support you and address any concerns you may have. Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by the miscommunication. We appreciate your understanding in this matter and wish you all the best in your endeavors abroad. Yours sincerely, Cindy Mootoosamy Practice Manager

Every doctor I have even spoken to is kind, listens, and has explored the health concern fully. I fully recommend.
