  1. Review titled Disappointed - this surgery used to be great

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 27 February 2024

This surgery has previously been great but my experience today and in the last year has just left me disappointed. I've developed a chronic condition that I didn't have before. It's affecting my ability to work, actually causing issues with my job now. My experience is, apart from one doctor who is great, everyone else falls short. I've been given no advice on how to manage it and put through weeks of repetitive tests that could have been ordered at once, whilst my quality of life is gone. I'm in significant pain and have received no support or advice. When I try get appointments, regardless of what I said reception decides I'm not important and gives me one days later unless I complain. There used to be an option to state how urgent things are, as they clearly don't read the requests properly. Any phone appointments now have 2 hour slots, rather than 1 hour. This doesn't take into account that most people have jobs and duties that don't allow for sitting by a phone for 2 hours. There's no provision for helping people who might have trouble getting into the surgery because of health issues with samples. If I did not have a partner to assist me, I would not be able to do any tests. Why is this surgery so inaccessible to people with disabilities? My last appointment was with a contacted doctor who did the entire appointment on speaker phone with barely audible sound and rushed the appointment. Absolutely not inclusive and extremely unprofessional. This doesn't even take into account that last year I was left without an essential medication, cold turkey with no notice, and they refused to assist me because a trust should be dealing with it. A trust that was ignoring all their patients. I used to really sing the praises for this surgery, as it does have a wonderful doctor who helped me turn my life around at a difficult time, but I feel the admin care/attention (or lack of) really lets it down. Some of it is funding related I'm sure, but attitudes and conduct of some staff should not be.

Dear Anonymous I am unable to comment on the individual points you raise as I do not know who you are and am therefore unable to look up the specifics. Do please contact me at the surgery if you want me to fully investigate the things you have listed and I would be happy to look into this. What I can do is respond to the more generic points you have raised: 1. It would be very unusual to order lots of investigations all in one go - and I certainly wouldn't presume to question the professional decisions of the doctors in what they are requesting (test wise) and when. 2. Appointments are allocated on a clinical needs basis and not on how urgent a patient feels the issue is. We feel this is a very important distinction to make - it enables us to see patients in a timely fashion according to how urgently our clinical team feel is appropriate. We have a range of appointments available from within a few hours, to a few days and beyond. 3. The practice is accessible for patients with a disability - there is disabled parking and full ground floor access Please do contact me directly if you would like to discuss the issues you have raised further. Many thanks - Sarah Benton - Practice Manager

  2. Review titled Can always get an appointment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

We’ve been at the practice for about 15 years, luckily we are pretty healthy but I have always managed to get an appointment when I need one, everyone is very sensible and will go out of their way to help you. The phone and emails are answered. There is no “computer says no” vibe, everyone operates on a very human level. I’ve always been really happy with the treatment and advice we receive and when friends complain about their own (different) GP surgeries or I read in the media about GPS not having any appointments or etc, I just don’t recognise those problems at Berrylands Surgery. Thanks for all the hard work.

  3. Review titled Gone downhill

Rated 1 star out of 5

I need a continual supply of repeat prescriptions for my partner who is seriously ill. But having to continually chase them up is very tiresome. I phone the pharmacy to see if prescriptions are ready only to be told that they have nothing for him. Then I have sit and wait on the phone to chase the surgery up (which sometimes can be a long time). When I explain that it is urgent I'm told that it is waiting for the doctor to sign. Does anybody there understand the word 'Urgent'.

Dear L.V-A I am unable to investigate or comment on this without some more information. Prescriptions are processed within 2 working days of receiving the request. I would be very happy to look into this and work with you to find a solution if you contact the practice directly rather than leaving an anonymous comment which is impossible to respond to in any detail. Many thanks Sarah Benton - Practice Manager
