  1. Review titled Done care of you’re in agony and lie about wait times

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 28 March 2025

Made the stupid decision to go here after NHS 111 advised me I should. Arrived at 1pm and booked in. Took an hour to bee seen by Triage who could see I was really struggling with cruches, this due to me being there as my left foot is swollen and in extreme pain for 5 days so couldn’t touch it let alone put weight on it and my existing right sided sciatica meant I was struggling to put weight on my right side due to weakness. Nearly fell over moving to triage who were made aware of the issue why I was there and my existing disability which meant I was in pain with that too, which would get significantly worse sitting or standing on that leg. At 5:15, in extreme discomfort due to sciatica I asked what the likely wait time was - I was told there was only one person in front of me. Others were being told that the wait time was ‘up to’ 6 hours. At 6:30, still not having been seen I asked again with difficulty getting to reception, and was told that I was next and the doctor had taken my paperwork. At 7:30 I asked again explaining that I should be lying down due to the sciatica, and was told the same again so I asked if it could be chased up due to the extreme, increasing pain and she rolled her eyes. I explained that just being there was traumatic and having major impact on my sciatica which wasn’t even why I was there, but an issue with the other foot meaning it was swollen and in extreme pain. She said she’d chase it up, she did nothing. At 8:30 I phoned the hospital and asked to be put through to A&E rather than go to reception. I got through and again was told by someone else that ‘I am next’. I explained that I was told that 2 hours ago, and over 3 hours ago was told there was one person in front of me. Throughout this time I had heard them telling people the wait time was up to 6 hours - I’d been there 7 1/2 at that point. She put me through to ‘zone 4’ who were the ones going to see me and they said I’m next and to move to there. That took me 10mins for a 30 second walk. 10pm, was seen after many others in zone 4 before me despite ’being next’. Consultant came to look too, asked when I arrived, said that’s too long and due to obvious pain saw no need for blood tests as they’d take 2 hours and didn’t think they’d show anything. Did want to do an xray which would be quick despite me having one 6 days earlier and being bedridden since. That took nearly 2 hours and then the female doctor wanted to do the blood tests her consultant dismissed that’d take ‘an hour’. 30 minutes later, no one had even been to take them, pain was through the roof on the foot they’d been messing with, my back and other leg due to sciatica so I had no choice but to leave as needed to lie down. Explained this to her as I was leaving, her reply was ‘you don’t need to lie down for blood tests’. I just sighed and said ‘what - I ‘need’ to lie down, that’s not happening here is it and your consultant didn’t want those tests’. I’m now much worse than when I went there!

  2. Review titled calf muscle strain

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by John Coburn - Posted on 15 October 2024

attended accident & emergency with a calf strain. Unable to walk and having to hop. Saw one nurse for obs. Saw another nurse in black uniform for ‘triage’. No assessment. Saw a third nurse who let me hop the full length of accident and emergency to minors. Quick assessment and offered painkillers. No quantification of the grade of injury. No imaging. Had to ask for crutches. Welcome to the new national health service..

  3. Review titled Awful experience

by Anonymous - Posted on 16 July 2024

I was sent to a&e after visiting my GP with numbness down my left arm & face. I waited 13 hours to be told I had a migraine after a 15 second consultation. I understand that urgent cases take priority but to watch numerous people come and go before me, including 4 different men who had clearly been fighting after the England match, a drink driver arrested by the police with chest pains, and someone who regularly self harms and had burned himself. I think a long hard look at the “priority” system is needed asap.

  5. Review titled Inhumane waiting times

Rated 1 star out of 5

The waiting times for A&E at Whiston hospital are honestly inhumane. Arriving to a 10 hour wait, then being told after 10 hours that its changed to 15 hours. Which despite the wait time turned into more like 17 hours. Bare in mind my doctor told me i have to go to the hospital straight away because of my condition. It was not self diagnosis. Its physically and metally excruciating and to sit there for that long to be seen and cruel to leave patiens in this position. The goverment need to 'get a grip' of how these hospitals are run. No fault of doctors and nurses working flat out. But its simply not good enough for a 1st world country to treat its citizens this way !

  6. Review titled 17 hours

Rated 1 star out of 5

After being advised by my GP to attend A&E, I spent the next 12 hours waiting in Whiston A&E service. I was initially seen by a doctor who was willing to discharge me but wanted to check with a consultant first. The consultant decided I needed to have a CT and lumbar puncture so I was then taken to a fourth waiting room. My blood pressure was taken 5 times, once in each location. I then was finally seen by a doctor just before midnight who said they would allow me to decide my plan of action as to whether I wanted to wait another 2-4 hours for a CT to be done urgently overnight. I thankfully decided to go home and come back the next morning. I then spent another 5 hours after my CT waiting for the results to be told I just had blocked sinuses. Not once in the many nurses and doctors I saw did anyone suggest this or suggest trying something for this which would have saved everyone so much time and money. Also, I had to have numerous blood tests and have difficult veins, my arms and now black and blue, the worst bruising I've ever had from nurses trying to dig for veins and/or blowing veins. Most of the staff were good but I was told to be patient, which after 17 hours seemed like a stretch.

  7. Review titled Need to get a grip

Rated 1 star out of 5

9am about 12 people 11an triple the amount not much movement apart from triage. Then bloods. Maybe xray. Triage should be doing all of this needs rethinking to utilise best way of keeping the que down. Anyway nearly 3 hours later still sitting there with my eye severely blood shot(which I thought eyes were precious/important) triage is a joke doesn't matter what you come in with no one seems to care. As a nurse I feel ashamed of my profession.

Really need to do better they expe t us to treat them with respect but do not do the same for the patients..awful complaint. I did not visit that department for fun of it.Visited because I was told to for compromise of breathing.

Attended with a badly infected cyst, which was extremely painful. waited 2 hours for triage, to be told I'd have to wait to see a doctor, when I asked how long the wait was, I was told12-13 hours, Couldnt get seat as it was packed, Standing with cyst became unbearably painful. After 3 hours I returned home/ Intolerable wait while in severe pain.

  10. Review titled Unprofessional triage nurse

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Debbie - Posted on 20 March 2024

Was advised by my GP to go to a&e after I had been triaged by 111 and told to speak with my GP then go to a&e Triage nurse at Whiston was incredibly rude kept cutting me off and asked if it was an emergency why I was there, erm I don’t know I don’t have a medical degree but after being triaged by 2 separate health care professionals and told to go to a&e by both then I’m guessing yes it is an emergency. I have seen this before one sector of the nhs unhappy that another sector has passed you on to them, the internal workings of the nhs is not my problem I just want decent, professional care and as a tax payer for over 30 years and visiting a&e only one other time in my life, I don’t think that is asking too much.
