Review titled Excellent service
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Don Hunt - Posted on 13 October 2024
Having now had my second eye treated for my cataracts I would recommend Spa Medica to anyone for cateract treatment. They treated me in a caring and professional manner from start to finish. The only difference with my first and second eye was that on the first occasion I had three static dots of light on which to focus throughout the proceedure where on this occasion the three dots kept moving making it a little more difficult to focus. I would recommend asking if these light dots could be allowed to remain static.

From the communications through the caring and supportive transport experience to the super efficient team at the hospital, their patience, courtesy and good humour, everything was top notch, and although this sort of experience can never be pleasant, everything was done to mitigate the downsides. Top marks to an excellent business.

A well organised and caring organisation.I would recommend them to all. You feel that you are in safe competent hands from the moment you arrive to your departure. My surgery for my lens to be replaced because they had developed cataracts was an unexpectedly comfortable experience .

Review titled Indifferent Patient Aftercare
Rated 2 stars out of 5

My advice is to thoroughly research SpaMedica before agreeing to an eye operation by them. I had a left eye cataract operation undertaken in late August 2024 in Poole, Dorset that had serious complications culminating in a second operation in October at Southampton for a retinal detachment. Over the past two months I have spent collectively over 40 hours in Poole and Southampton SpaMedica waiting rooms. SpaMedica are so obviously a target/profit driven NHS out-sourced company and their inflexible conveyor belt approach to patient care is one of indifference and not actually as efficient as they purport to be. Something perhaps that the NHS should consider in more detail when they come to audit/review their contract with SpaMedica. Whilst undergoing the retinal detachment surgery in Southampton, it was patently obvious that the theatre team comprised of several nationalities, and they were having communication issues between each other regarding operational procedures and equipment prep. Not exactly reassuring when you are under the knife knowing that you could possibly lose your sight. Over the past 2 months, I have had appointments with circa 11 different SpaMedica surgeons at Poole/Southampton. Post operation outpatients like me are typically given follow up appointments for 12.30pm. Why? The surgeons operate in the morning and then see outpatients in a short lunchtime window before heading back into afternoon surgery. If they had complications with any surgeries in the morning, outpatient appointments become severely delayed as has happened to me on the majority of occasions. Emergency operations are back-ended to the end of the day Whilst I would not question the medical competencies of SpaMedica's Consultant Surgeons, it seems that the target driven pressured environment under which the staff operate means that they have limited time to read patient notes accurately and/or adequately answer patient's queries or concerns. Lest SpaMedica senior management forget that we are talking about people like me who are often very anxious about recovery and the potential of losing their sight as we pass through your care.

Review titled Eye Care

A very positive experience. The clinic has pleasant, polite and interested staff, who do their best to ensure a safe patient journey, whilst remaining professional and caring. The clinic is exceptionally clean with great facilities, such as well stocked tea & coffee machines & patient lockers. The housekeeping staff & receptionists are to be commended too. Special mention must be made of the ‘head porter’. He always appears efficient and friendly. On the day of my cataract operation I was sitting in the designated waiting area. The head porter came by with a clipboard, which was clearly a ‘daily check list’. One of the required checks must be the clinic wheelchair, stored in a corner near where I was seated. The porter brought out the wheelchair, checked the brakes, checked the foot rests then cleaned the seat before folding the chair back up, returning it to its space and ticking his list! How reassuring to know that if such care is taken of the basics, then care is obviously taken of everything else too. All too often in my work I’ve seen daily or weekly check lists simply signed off without due care. Well done that man!

Review titled A great service

The day didn’t start well with minibus not turning up and no communication regarding this. However once that was sorted the actual experience of surgery and staff at the centre was brilliant. Medication was given and lots of pamphlets regarding post operative care/meds explained it all. Whenever I’ve phoned head office they are always helpful and informative , you are not passed to other departments!!

Review titled Very professional

From being greeted at the door to leaving you are told every step and can ask any questions. The staff are knowledgable and charming, obviously trained very well. Being apprehensive of the operation I was nervous and not at all looking forward to the experience at all. I need not have worried at all. Cannot wait for my other eye to be rectified! Well done, keep up the good work.

Review titled Efficient service

When I had an eye test in July, at which I was told that I would be referred for cataract surgery, I was very pleased to be offered an assessment appointment at SpaMedica Bexhill on 2nd August. I was accepted for surgery but told that, because mine was complex, I would have to go to SpaMedica Southampton. As I live in Eastbourne, Hospital transport was provided for my 11am appointment on 3rd October. The surgery appears to have gone well for which I'm very grateful.

Review titled Wonderful experience
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was dreading my cataract removal but I needn’t have worried as the whole experience was professional from start to finish. Very friendly staff and a brilliant surgeon who was patient with my asking questions as to what was going on especially when I felt a weird sensation but no pain. All over in a short while and good results. I’m at ease now and looking forward to my second eye being done as it’s rather weird having only one eye being so clear . I’m hoping to have the same surgeon. I’m not enjoying all the eye drops but getting used to the regime and know it’s for the good and health of my eye. Thank you everyone.
