If someone you know needs help with their healthcare, you can ask for secure access to their GP services. You may be able to order medication, book appointments, or use other online GP services on their behalf, if the GP surgery thinks it is appropriate. This is sometimes called having proxy access.
The NHS is trialling a new service where you can apply online for proxy access. You can only use this service if your GP surgery is taking part in this trial.
You will need to use your NHS login. If you do not have one yet, you can set one up as part of your application.
Who can use this service
You must be aged 16 or over to apply for proxy access.
Use this service if the person you want to help:
- wants you to ask for access on their behalf
- is registered at the same GP surgery as you
- is aged 16 or over
- can understand and agree to giving you access - the GP surgery will check this
Do not use this service if:
- they have a condition that means they cannot understand or agree to giving you access
- you are their paid carer or work at their care home
Before you start
Talk to the person you want to help and find out what they want you to do on their behalf. Get the details you need to apply.
You will need their:
- first name and last name
- date of birth
- NHS number or postcode
Their NHS number is the best way to identify them.
Important
For security, we will log you out if you do not do anything for 10 minutes. Your information will not be saved, and you will need to start again.
By using this service, you agree to the terms of use and privacy policy.
What happens next
After you apply, we will send your application to your GP surgery.
We will send a text and an email copy of the application to the person you want to help, if they have these contact details on their NHS record.
The GP surgery will contact them and check they understand the request and agree with it.
The GP surgery will then give you the access they decide is appropriate, and tell you when this is done.
Contact the GP surgery if you have any questions about your application, after you have submitted it.
If you cannot use this service
If you are not able to use this service, ask your GP surgery if you can set up proxy access another way.
