Who can take paracetamol for children

Children can take paracetamol as:

  • a syrup from the age of 2 months
  • suppositories from the age of 3 months
  • tablets (including soluble tablets) from the age of 6 years
  • Calpol Fastmelts from the age of 6 years

Important: Babies under 2 months old

Do not give paracetamol to babies younger than 2 months old, unless it is prescribed by a doctor.

Who may not be able to take paracetamol for children

Paracetamol for children is not suitable for all children. To make sure it's safe for your child, check with your child's doctor or a pharmacist if they:

  • are small for their age, as a lower dose may be better
  • have had liver or kidney problems
