Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility while taking flucloxacillin

Flucloxacillin and pregnancy

You can take flucloxacillin during pregnancy. Check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking it.

Flucloxacillin and breastfeeding

It's OK to take flucloxacillin while breastfeeding.

Only tiny amounts of flucloxacillin get into breast milk, so it's unlikely to cause any side effects in your baby. Always check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking it.

It's important to treat an infection while you're breastfeeding as there's a risk that it could make you unwell if left untreated.

It's very rare for breastfed babies to have side effects from medicines you're taking. But it's important to keep monitoring your baby if you're taking any medicine while breastfeeding.

Contact your healthcare professional or call 111 as soon as possible if you notice that your baby:

  • is not feeding as well as usual
  • is being sick (vomiting) or has diarrhoea
  • has oral thrush (a fungal infection in their mouth) or a skin rash

If your baby has any symptoms that are not listed, or if you're worried about them, you can also call 111 or contact any healthcare professional.

Carry on taking flucloxacillin, and keep breastfeeding as usual until you've got advice about your baby's symptoms.

Flucloxacillin and fertility

There's no evidence to suggest that taking flucloxacillin will affect fertility in either men or women.

Non-urgent advice: Tell your doctor if you're:

  • trying to get pregnant
  • pregnant
  • breastfeeding
