Amoxicillin and pregnancy
It is safe to take amoxicillin during pregnancy. Check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking it.
Amoxicillin and breastfeeding
It's OK to take amoxicillin while breastfeeding because only tiny amounts of it get into breast milk. A few babies have had mild side effects, such as diarrhoea, drowsiness, or a rash, but this is very rare.
It's important to treat an infection while you're breastfeeding because there's a risk that an infection could make you unwell.
It's very rare for breastfed babies to have side effects from medicines you're taking. But it's important to keep monitoring your baby if you're taking any medicine while breastfeeding.
Contact your healthcare professional or call 111 as soon as possible if you notice that your baby:
- is not feeding as well as usual
- is being sick or has diarrhoea
- has oral thrush (a fungal infection in their mouth) or a skin rash
- seems more sleepy than normal
If your baby has any symptoms that are not listed, or if you're worried about them, you can also call 111 or contact any healthcare professional.
Carry on taking the medicine, and keep breastfeeding as usual until you've got advice about your baby's symptoms.
Amoxicillin and fertility
There's no evidence to suggest that taking amoxicillin affects fertility in either men or women.
Non-urgent advice: Tell your doctor if you're:
- trying to get pregnant
- pregnant
- breastfeeding
