Find your NHS Number

You can find your NHS Number on any letters you have had from the NHS.

Check any:

  • prescriptions
  • test results
  • hospital referral letters
  • appointment letters

You can also:

If you cannot find your NHS number after trying these options, you can ask your GP surgery for it.


You do not need your NHS number to use NHS services, including booking appointments.

To get healthcare cover abroad you can apply for a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or a UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
