Situated at the heart of the borough, University Hospital Lewisham is a teaching hospital that obtained University status in 1997 due to the role it plays in undergraduate education and research.
As well as providing the majority of services of a traditional general hospital, it provides specialist services in a number of important areas, including:
- Children's Day Care Surgery
- Neonatal Intensive Care
- Cystic Fibrosis Treatement
- Ear, Nose & Throat Services
- Vascular Surgery
- Midwife-led Birth Centre
It is also one of the few hospitals in London to have a separate children’s A&E Department; a service that is rated as ‘Excellent’ by the Healthcare Commission.
The Hospital has over 2,500 members of staff, and serves a diverse population of around 265,000. It has been named as one of the CHKS top 40 hospitals for the third year running, and is a 'showcase' hospital with one of the lowest rates of infection in the UK.
