Portage is a home visiting service which offers support, help and advice to families with a young child who has special needs. Children receiving Portage have a delay in their development. Sometimes this is part of a known medical condition or syndrome, but not always. The Portage service is mainly funded by the local education authority although some Portage teams include workers funded by the health service and by social services.
