  1. Review titled Smear tests excruciating nowadays

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Jaya - Posted on 17 July 2024

As a 50 year old woman who has had smear tests since her twenties and a colposcopy for that matter, I went for a smear test today which I could not even go through as the pain was so terrible I could not continue. I am sure healthcare professionals will be citing my age etc as reasons, it I have noticed that since nurses seem to be using these metal speculums instead of the plastic speculums they are far more painful and difficult to get through. My last one was pretty bad because of this but I managed it. Today it wa as solute torture. No thought was given to having a tilted uterus and yes I might be tense, but I’ve managed for twenty five years and to be honest it has put me off going back as I was almost in tears with the excruciating pain. This is hardly pro outing cervical screening and more thought. Reds to be going I tohow to make this more comfortable for patients, I’ve had precancerous cells before and the speculum was changed to a smaller one at the hospital and plastic and was far more comfortable. These metal speculums press really hard down and are awful. Surely in these times there must be better ways and methods. I was basically booted out to go a clinic to use a tilted bed but I don’t think this is just the answer. After all she could have put blankets underneath me which served the same but she did not concern herself with this, I’m afraid if a review of how procedures can be done more sensitively the. The uptake will be low, even bough I’ve had precancerous cells, I cannot face going back after today through the fear of the pain to be inflicted as it was nothing like I had k own before,

  2. Review titled waste of time

Rated 1 star out of 5

I was asked to have a smear test and did so on the understanding that they would actually test the sample that was collected. I received a letter saying they hadn't tested the sample for cell changes as there was no high risk HPV in the sample. I could have told them that was the case if they asked me as I haven't had sex for 20 years. What a waste of time and money for everyone involved.

  3. Review titled Why send NHS letter

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Claire cook - Posted on 08 December 2023

Had an NHS letter stating due for a smear. Called Dr booked up smear for that day wanted at surgery nearest to me. Called to me by phone said nurse was not available so had to go to next surgery further away. Had 4:30an start following morning to work but went to appointment at 5:20 pm day before it was a wet day ask husband give a lift cost him petrol money and had get long bus ride back. Just saw me after 5min wait said not due smear test till 2025 last one was 2020 and if I do have a test it would not be accurate. Very annoyed time not having to travel in cold wet weather could went bed early next working day. Why send nhs letter for smear when not due one nurse stated was over 50 and all my past test were ok nurse said I thought this reason made no sense as cancer can come when it wants. Whole even wasted. When could of been at home.

  4. Review titled Repeat cervical screening letter 85 yrs old?!

Rated 3 stars out of 5

My mum aged 85 moved house to be close to me and in the last 5 months she has received 2 letters inviting her to a cervical screening. We ignored the first letter but when the second arrived I called the GP as there is no contact number or address on the letter. GP receptionist advised they cannot do anything and have no number for the admin dept of this. It's so laughable because not only is my mum 85 by she had a full Hysterectomy 40 years ago. If anyone can contact me with details how I can get in touch with this dept. I would appreciate it as I feel this stresses my mum out and also it is such a waste of NHS resources.

  5. Review titled Missed Smear Letter 🤬

Rated 3 stars out of 5

I had a gynaecology appointment yesterday regarding unexplained bleeding and possible polyps which I’ve had before. The gynaecologist queried why I hadn’t had a smear since 2016 so I said I thought I had but it’s transpired after speaking to my drs surgery that I haven’t had one. I always make an appt as soon as I receive a letter because I had laser surgery for precancerous cells when I was younger, plus cysts removed and in 2022 polyps removed. I’m extremely concerned that I received no letter and am now 2 years overdue for a smear!! Really bad service!
