Review titled Plaster room
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by MRS J REEVES - Posted on 28 April 2025
I have had dealings with 4 members of the plaster room after having surgery for a broken ankle. The care and service was exceptional from all of them. Thank you.

Review titled Rude staff & inefficient
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 18 March 2025
Absolutely awful experience - my head had been cut open by a hard fall and all I was given was paracetamol and then sent to wait for over 5 hours. Mind you there were only 4 other people waiting and people were sent in front of me just for being drunk. Then a bald and rude member of staff told my friends off for sleeping while waiting for me (meanwhile there are more than 20 seats open) and had a go at me for telling him that they were waiting for me. Was then told that there were at least 4 hours more to wait so we left without further treatment as it was 5AM at this point - you think they'd prioritise a head wound (bleeding heavily) and possible concussion but obviously not - spend more of their time harassing people sleeping in the middle of the night (obviously) you all should be ashamed of yourselves.

Hi. I appreciate your feedback regarding your experience in the department. The emergency department has several areas - waiting room, (11 spaces) Minors, (15 beds) Majors, (6 spaces) Children's area + CED waiting room, and (8 beds) Resus. We aim to triage ambulatory patients coming in to the department within 15minutes of arrival. The triage nurse will ensure that we categorise your presenting condition appropriately using Manchester Triage Category and determine at the time the urgency of treatment required. They will also provide or endorse to waiting room nurse any first aid treatment needed to be done for the patient to address concerns such as bleeding wound. Part of the triage nurse's responsibility is to assess your pain level and will aim to address it. However, their capacity to provide you pain relief in the triage room is limited to Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, anything other than that will need prescription from our doctors which can be done. We do encourage our patients to let us know if they needed further pain relief. Waiting time in the department can be long. This depends on the number of patients waiting to be seen, the number of doctors and practitioners that are on shift to see these patients, and the acuity of the patient's condition that are presented in the department. I understand your frustration of having to wait in the waiting room for 5hours when you noted that there were only 4 people in the waiting room. However, at the time of your attendance, the clinicians might have been pulled to other areas to see patients needing immediate life saving treatment or there were other patients waiting to be seen in the other areas I have mentioned above. We see an average of 250 patients a day and the department, so even our waiting room can be full. We may sometimes ask patients to limit the number of their company to ensure we give space for other patients attending the ED. As this is a public space, we expect our patients and their relatives and friends to act in proper decorum. This is the same how you would expect us, ED staff, to treat our patients equally and with respect. It would really be helpful for us if you can let us know your details so we can have a look and investigate as to whether your triage was done appropriately so we can also feedback to our staff and use this as a learning point. I will include in our safety brief a reminder for all staff to always treat and speak to our patients and their relatives with respect and good manner. Rudeness is something that we will not tolerate in the department especially amongst our staff members. Again, thank you for your feedback and I hope that you are recovering well. Kind regards, Mitch Clinical Nurse Manager Emergency Department

Review titled Far better than led to believe by the Media

My sister had “heart burn” all day and high pulse rate. Called 111 and were recommended to go to RD&E Emergency Dept. This was at midnight so arrived about 12.30 am. Checked in and reception already had details from 111. My sister was seen within 15 mins for initial assessment and advised she would need a blood test which could be an hour before it was taken and then have to wait a couple of hours before the result would be available. All as expected. When called to the “bed” area of the emergency ward she was hooked up to monitors and kept an eye on. All questions were answered as best the nurses could whilst waiting for results of blood tests. The doctor arrived to explain the blood test results which showed that she had suffered a, fortunately, mild heart attack. A bit of a shock as my sister is a fit 64 year old. The doctor wanted to keep her in for a couple of days to do more tests and decide on treatment. All was carefully and thoughtfully explained. I left my sister in the very capable and kind hands of the staff and left around 3.30. My sister was treated promptly and in a very kindly and helpful manner. Thank goodness for the NHS. Thank you to everyone who looked after her.

Review titled Awful experience

After spending over a day in the AMU I wanted to self discharge due to the rudeness of some of the non nursing staff on the ward and not being given dinner and it took over 2 hours to be let out. I didn't want to talk to the dr and nothing was going to change my mind. Would never recommend this ward or hospital. Security are rude and shout for no reason.

I recently was admitted to the Dybal surgery ward for high risk Surgery on my neck/spine. I was in Theatre for five hours then in recovery for 24 hrs and two day on the ward. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the surgeons and surgery teams for the first class operation and after care. And also want to give a very big thanks to the Nurses and all Nursing staff for giving me the best care I could have asked for. They all work so hard under so much pressure but still smile. Thank you very much too you all.

Review titled Otters all day
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Johnny Blaize - Posted on 12 October 2024
Yeah, just spent three weeks in Otter Ward recovering from a laryngectomy, but it wasn't the procedure that left me speechless, it was the people. Everyone from the nurses, the surgeons, the cleaners and caterers. Every single person I came into contact with was just amazing. That cannot be statistically right, right? Trust me, I am not a 'people person', but these people are something else. Even when I sat in bed and had no choice but to have to watch or listen when they dealt with non compliant patients, it was a level of cool, caring professionalism that cannot be normal. These folks are incredible. Am I glad to be home safe and sound? Of course. However, I really miss seeing a bunch of mates I have never even spoken too. They were there when I couldn't get in contact with my friends and family for the first week of my stay, but will live forever in my heart. Soppy? Yeah. Worth it. Thanks you so, so much for making this part of my journey as smooth as it possibly could be. Just a massive, mass

by Lynette Billings - Posted on 14 September 2024
Having recently spent 5 days on Durbin ward i have nothing but praise for the treatment i received. Every member of staff from domestic ,catering ,nursing ,consultants were first class . Nothing was too much trouble and i felt very safe and comfortable on my ward with 4 delightful companions. There is nothing i would change and all the staff deserve a mention but there so very kind and made my stay so very pleasant despite the pain i was in .If you are going to the RD&E fear not all is well and go in with confidence
