  1. Review titled Unhappy Experience

I had cataract surgery today at Optegra Newcastle. All the staff were lovely and friendly except for the surgeon who was extremely rude to me. He talked down to me as if I was a child who wouldn’t do what they were told. I left the clinic extremely upset and am in a lot of pain.

  2. Review titled Largely satisfactory experience

Rated 4 stars out of 5

I had a cataract operation today . Reception, pre and post operation staff were great The only downside of an otherwise very satisfactory experience was that throughout the operation the surgeon had an unbroken rant with his assistant about some logistical problem regarding the hospital including a threat to walk out and 'they can get someone else'. I assumed he didn't mean half way through my operation. Bearing in mind my position I resisted the temptation to ask. I realise it is an extremely routine procedure but found it unnerving that he did not appear fully focussed on the task in hand or felt the need to engage with me at all. I guess time will tell. So far I have not experienced the immediate benefit which followed a similar, although more comfortable, operation at Bishop Auckland. Early days.

  3. Review titled Excellent and all staff friendly and helpful.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

The process was impeded by the confused method of allocating appointments by by Optegra head office. A November appointment was arranged so early that it was impossible to reach there by NHS transport. Head office refused to allocate a later appointment and so it was cancelled. A later one in January was arranged. I arrived there after travelling two hours from Berwick to be told it had been cancelled, citing transport problems. I had not been notified and had no transport problems. The staff at Gateshead overcame all difficulties and the operation was successfully completed. They have my thanks, receptionist, nurses and surgeon saved the reputation of Optegra

Had laser treatment for both eyes following problems with implants. Was called exactly on time and treat with care. The operation was successful. Refreshments were available. Facilities spotlessly clean and professional.

  5. Review titled Unprofessional Communication

Rated 2 stars out of 5

My mother attended appointment at 15:30 of August 15th 2022. Her procedure was not completed until approximately 19:15 , and we eventually could leave at about 19:45 once paperwork and a waiting period had happened. There was no communication when we arrived that her procedure would be around 4 hours delayed. My mother was taken through to the surgery rooms at round 17:00. My father spoke to one of the employees at around 17:50 to be told my mother had had the surgery and was fine , and was now filling in paperwork. He told me this at 18:00 , but by 18:30 I asked the receptionist what was going on and why it was taking such a long time , she said there had been an issue earlier in the morning and she would find out what was happening. She informed me it would take another 30 minutes for my mother to come out. At 19:15 my father was told my mother was just getting the cataract surgery at that point , and when we were making a complaint regarding the delay and not being told about it , one of the employees in blue clothing which I assume was a nurse said to me "it is what it is". I agree the delay may have been unavoidable , but the fact that the nursing staff and reception staff could not have told us that there would be a major delay is unacceptable , the fact they also did not update us with accurate details is also not acceptable. Knowing that there was likely to be a long delay Optegra did not offer my mother or my father any refreshments , and also did not seem to have any process in place to communicate the delay, and also deal with problems arising from such a delay , for example Optegra would know where patients live , and should know some of them may be reliant on public transport , so leaving at 19:45 could mean someone not getting back to their home until well after 21:00 (I wonder what length of delay Optegra deem as unacceptable). If Optegra had told us of the delay we could have arrived later , made further arrangements (for travel or refreshments) or may have decided not to go ahead on the day. My mothers first appointment was cancelled , so overall I would say the surgical service is acceptable , but the communication with the patients and their relatives is not.
