  1. Review titled Excellent Care and Treatment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Christine Reid - Posted on 01 April 2025

I was referred by my doctor for a consultation concerning problems with both my knees. The consultant I saw quickly established rapport and, having examined my knees and arranged for X-Rays, his explanation of the results and the options for treatment were clear and easy to follow. We agreed that knee replacement surgery would be most appropriate for my condition, and arrangements would be made for the operation on my right knee. This took place well within the time frame he was able to predict. On the day of the operation his approach in explaining the procedure and throughout was very reassuring. The after care I have received from him and all the nursing and care staff involved at the Hospital has also been excellent. Also, all the support staff I have encountered, and at every level, have been friendly, professional and efficient. My physiotherapist at the Hospital worked gently but firmly with me to persevere with the exercise program he devised. Through his efforts and guidance, my confidence in walking and mobility have been restored and, I think, sooner than I could have expected. I am very grateful to all at the Hospital for their care and devotion. I have recently been referred for replacement surgery on my left knee and have no reservations about the procedure and the treatment I will receive at Highgate Hospital.

  2. Review titled Felt awful after seeing the consultant

Rated 3 stars out of 5

My lovely NHS GP sent me to see an orthopaedic consultant because l was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis. When you are worried about your health seeing someone who is kind and engaging and interested in a way that puts you at ease is so important. I saw a lady consultant who has an excellent reputation regarding her work and her knowledge and capability.l felt lucky to be seeing a consultant who seemed highly thought of. However upon meeting her, her manner, which is also important to the patient was cold and totally impersonal. I felt ill at ease from the get go, when before even introducing herself, she ushered me in and simply asked me how old l was. She didn’t discuss the results of my last x Ray as if it was irrelevant telling me that X-rays don’t give much information which l feel sure might well be true, she is the expert not l, however they do give some information and indeed my initial X-ray confirmed my spondylolisthesis in the first place. Although l have read this consultant has an excellent reputation where her medical aptitude is concerned which is why l felt l might be in excellent hands related to medical standards of care which l am not deliberating here, l am sure she is excellent medically, her manner was not in any way welcoming or kind. I left feeling like l had seen someone who made me feel quite awful. Not once did she ask me if there was anything l would like to know about the condition, she merely told me l needed another MRI and she couldn’t comment about anything diagnostically. Fair enough, there were however questions l would have liked to ask outside a diagnosis but felt too uncomfortable to ask. I personally feel the way you are treated by a medical expert is also so important, and l can only say that this lady profoundly lacked any warmth or feeling that you might be in caring thoughtful hands however medically adept they might be.l felt totally like some irrelevant case number. It took me all morning to shake off the whole experience luckily enough l have rarely been made to feel like that through the NHS or privately.
