  1. Review titled Heartfelt Thanks

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Arif - Posted on 11 June 2025

my 91-year-old mother was admitted to midland metropolitan university hospital in birmingham on june 6, 2025, after a fall, and is also being investigated for possible bowel cancer (which is still unconfirmed). as soon as i heard about her condition, i travelled from london to be with her, worried about her health and how she would cope in the hospital, as she doesn’t speak english. during this difficult time, we were fortunate to meet a very special nurse who works on ward b9. from the moment i spoke with her at the start of her shift on june 10, 2025, at 7:30 pm, i felt a great sense of comfort. i shared my concerns about communication, and she calmly reassured me that she would take care of my mother using gestures, sign language, and body language. she promised my mother would not feel alone, and i trusted her. i was deeply moved when i returned to the ward the following morning at 11:20 am. by that time, her shift had already ended. my mother’s face was glowing; she looked peaceful, rested, and happy. the first words she said to me were, “the care nurse is an angel.” she shared how beautifully she had been cared for throughout the night and how safe she had felt. my mother said, “if all nurses were like this, nobody would fear being in the hospital.” we often encounter people who do their jobs simply out of obligation. however, now and then, we meet someone who brings true heart and compassion into their work. this nurse made an incredible difference not only to my mother but also to me and my family. her kindness brought us peace during a very stressful time. i believe hospitals everywhere should seek out and value professionals who combine skill, dedication, and genuine love for patient care. she is a true credit to the hospital and the entire profession. thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  2. Review titled thank you doctors and staff of b9 ward

Over the past eight days visiting my mum in this hospital, I have consistently witnessed the dedication and professionalism of the entire ward team. I am extremely grateful for the high standard of care provided. On 13 June 2025, at approximately 12:30PM during a ward round, one doctor demonstrated exceptional compassion, taking time to listen and engage with each patient in a truly kind and respectful manner. Such person-centred care makes a tremendous difference to patients and their families. Thank you to the entire team for your excellent work.

  3. Review titled Great hospital and B9 ward compassionate patient care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Review of Midland Metropolitan University Hospital – Ward B9 My mother has been diagnosed with liver cancer and, due to her age, is not receiving any further treatment. She is currently being cared for in Ward B9 as we await a Macmillan Cancer Support care package before her discharge. Yesterday, my mum asked to explore more of the hospital, so I took her on a short wheelchair tour. She truly appreciated the peaceful fifth floor and the beautiful spiritual center. We also visited the ground floor, the canal behind the hospital, and the common area. She was genuinely uplifted by how thoughtfully designed and welcoming the hospital environment is—far from cold or clinical. The care my mum has received on Ward B9 has been exceptional. The staff, especially the consultant, have treated her with compassion, dignity, and professionalism at every stage. Having worked in partnership with the NHS for over 30 years, I have seen many care settings, and I can honestly say the standard here is truly outstanding. I am incredibly grateful to everyone on Ward B9. You have made a very difficult time easier for my mother and our family, and that means the world to us. Arif

  4. Review titled ward c6 - exemplar

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Due to recent admission of my dad following a stroke, I can only commend the treatment received on behalf of my family. This is a new experience for us, as his children and I can only say that the staff on c6 ward have been extremely helpful in a time of distress. Compassionate and respectful of our concerns. Special thanks goes to the ward a sister, who was approachable, and returned when she said she would. She and her team work hard to meet everyone's needs (I don't recall her beautiful name, but on day shift 09.10.25. Another thanks to Ward Discharge nurse and ward manager, in trying to settle my worries over receiving updates. My mom is lovely but not retaining all the detail we need as children to be sure we know what any plans are and where we can help. They are 'old school'. No trouble. The atmosphere in the Ward is quietly professional getting on with the tasks, and you feel all is in control. No panic or staff not knowing who to direct you to or ask, if needed. My first experience of mmuh is of awe and pride for our area. The layout and getting around without getting lost is completely rubbish. So much space, you wonder if some of it could be put to better use. I am sure it will evolve over time. One other observation - the front does not represent the prestige that a hospital of this calibre should look like. Dry, literally. Just some grass - no colour, no flowers, no statue or sculpture. Very unappealing. I appreciate that budgets get stretched, but there must be a charity that supports? or could they club together and donate to an independent fund for the grand entrance frontage? Congrats to all the mmuh teams - keep going for our area.

Taken to the new hospital yesterday for the first time I always liked sandwell hospital but this is so much better facilities obviously new but an improvement from sandwell. I was treated excellently throughout my time there all staff very polite and helpful. Apart from the wait it was a good experience. In the event I need to revisit I will always ask to be taken to the metropolitan hospital.

  8. Review titled Staff

Rated 3 stars out of 5

Ok this is my first experience at this new hospital. Have to say that I was surprised that there were no new road signs about. Thought that would be the norm. So my mom was admitted quite quickly but the overall wait for results was no better than Sandwell or city. She has been admitted into AMU and I have to say the staff in bay F are great!Hats off to staff. Lovely friendly and professional. Feel my mom is in safe hands..personally I think we are a long way off at any hospital to shorter waiting times..so it is what it is for now. So.. the hospital itself. Never been in such a cold hospital. So much open space that is wasted. Level 5 high ceilings and seating area. How on earth can you heat it??? Looks great but why would you sit there and freeze. Heat rises and all it’s doing is going straight up to the heavens! So much wasted space. Even the AMU was chilly. Tile missing right by moms bed. Takes some navigating round the place but I’m getting there. Lovely lad helped me yesterday. I really feel this could be a great hospital if the people that run it listen to the people that use it.. Why I can’t use the staffs name is beyond me!

  10. Review titled Awful place

I was at A&E yesterday couldn’t believe the chaos. What a joke, full to bursting, no order at all, can’t hear your name being called, then we you are called you still have to stand at wait for a room to see the doctor. How can you justify closing 2 A&E’s, this hospital can’t cope at all.
