Book your first hospital outpatient appointment
When your GP refers you to a specialist, you will receive a letter, email or text which shows:
- your booking reference number
- your access code
If you do not receive these details or you cannot find them, contact who referred you.
If you have not been referred
You need to be referred by a GP before you can book your first hospital outpatient appointment.
If you have not been referred, visit your GP or find a GP.
Find out what is happening about your first appointment
If you have chosen this hospital for your referral but have not heard about your first outpatient appointment, or you do not have an appointment date yet, it may be that:
- your referral is still being reviewed
- an appointment date is not yet available
To get an update:
- check your referral status on the ‘Manage your referral’ website - log in with your booking reference number and access code, or sign in with your NHS login
- contact the trust about your first outpatient appointment - try this too if there is no update on the ‘Manage your referral’ website
Check, change or cancel your first hospital outpatient appointment
If you have booked your appointment but you want to check, change or cancel it, contact the trust about your first outpatient appointment.
Follow-up appointments
If you need to book or manage more appointments, sometimes called follow-up appointments:
- use any new contact details given to you at your first appointment
- contact the department where you had your first appointment
