  1. Review titled Comparison of departments

My journey through ineffective triage ‘phone’ system led me to get to AE Gloucester 4hours later than I should have - having been left in a non moving queue for an hour and using MIU Tewkesbury (in order to not overburden Gloucestershire ironically) who could not actually deal with a more complex wrist fracture. X Ray done, I travel to Gloucester with my notes and have to wait from approx 6 in the evening to 4 in the morning the following day. I appreciate the waiting room is roughly 50% patients - but the numbers of patients left staff swamped. Once in with the team to treat me it was high standard. I felt supported and less scared. The waiting room experience was very stressful, I found myself feeling abandoned and sought reassurance I was actually expected. I was extremely exhausted and in a great deal of pain. Follow up to Fracture Clinic - Small delay but not unreasonable. All staff helpful and pleasant. Moved through initial consult, x-Ray and second consult fairly swiftly. Fracture had shifted and I was referred for urgent surgery. So I go to cardiology and Jenner Clinic - again a minimal wait and return to Reception with paperwork. My surgery was hopefully for next day. I got the initial call before I reached my car. The confirmation call that following morning at 7.30 to bring me in as confirmed booking. The May Hill unit This is a shining example of what a well run fully staffed hospital unit looks like. Can’t fault it. Staff across the board so willing, helpful and efficient. They were delightful. I felt safe and supported. A&E has the same quality staff, and when they spend that brief time with you it’s no less quality. But they are overwhelmed. Wheelchairs insufficient in number. One man was asked to vacate his, having had what they thought was a minor stroke, in order to accommodate an elderly gentleman being supported on both sides. A man with a head injury falling on me semi conscious. Staff respond. Interrupting the treatment they were about to do elsewhere. Things slipping through the net. Pain relief promised and forgotten. The team is stretched to breaking point throughout the entire day. Even taking into account all the fluctuations of a night mare of a task to manage, this is as clear as day. You need more staff. I know this is typical over NHS but honestly Gloucester, you have outstanding staff. Support them properly.

  2. Review titled Perfect example of overstretched nhs

Rated 2 stars out of 5

Despite my ordeal beginning at 4.30am and ending close to 4pm, not once was I offered the opportunity to lie down and rest. The benches are so uncomfortable that it feels almost as if they're designed to keep you awake. I was placed on an IV and rather than being allowed to lie down on a bed, I was left on the IV in the waiting area. Despite being confirmed as flu positive, I was still left in the oceanfront busy waiting area rather than placed anywhere more isolated. Wasn't offered anything to eat at any point, had to ask for it. Wasn't offered tissues so repeatedly had to roll myself and the IV to the toilet to use toilet roll. Was then left on an empty IV for almost 30 minutes and had to get up again to ask someone to remove it, as they'd told me I'd now been discharged. They removed the IV... and left the cannula. Another ten minute wait, wondering if they're come back, when one of the staff suggested I just walk into the minors ward and ask someone there to take it out for me, which I did. I was in the A&E itself for just under 9 hours, and all none of those hours were uncomfortable and miserable. I cannot overstate how much of a difference a bed or even a comfortable chair would have made me feel. The one nice chair I found near xray, I was sat in for less than two minutes before I was sent back to the hellchairs of the waiting room. I have so much time for our nhs workers, but this experience was so horrible that I can't sugar-coat it and try to say otherwise. It felt almost like I was being punished for being there. There were two other people there for just as long as me, one who was clearly in pain from being in these seats, and rather than being moved to somewhere more comfortable he was instead just offered pain killers over and over. Poor guy.

  4. Review titled Amazing service

I felt inclined to leave a review for the maternity care I have received whilst giving birth within the last week. From start to finish the care was impeccable, I felt valued and listened to at all times by midwives and HCA’s especially because I felt skeptical due to being a woman from an ethic background where sometimes certain health cues during child birth are missed. These women went above and beyond for me and made sure me and baby were safe and checked over thoroughly. The unit was spotless and welcoming as well as accommodating. The community midwifery after services were great too as well as all of the antenatal care I received through out as well. This experience has really allowed me to put my faith back into the NHS after not having good experiences in the past and I really appreciate those who are able to make that happen and hope they continue to thrive and pour that care into others.

Staff on the Mayhill unit were all brilliant. Very friendly and attentive. Nurses checked on me regularly and were very approachable and friendly. Drs were all nice and put me at easy before my surgery. Overall a positive experience thanks to the amazing staff

  6. Review titled Not happy

I have arrived to the emergency children's care with my 5 months son which had troubles breathing. At the entrance I was asked to write down my name on a piece of paper by a lady which wasn't the receptionist. My son had his observations checked by two nurses and his oxigen levels were fine. Someone else ask us to come in and check what is wrong with him and why I've bringed him in. When she checked his oxigen, was 90-91 and she said she may need some just to make him comfortable. During my wait there his observations were taken by someone who didn't have patience to check properly amd to attach the oxigen check machine properly, same with his heart rate etc. She was writing different numbers on the piece of paper that she had amd when I asked , she was saying that those were the numbers, which was false! When the doctor came amd check she was saying his obs are fine, trying to explain to her the nurse did take properly, she said : " no,no he's fine" , she gave me a piece of paper saying to come back in case he's getting worse and she assured me she will send a letter to the Gp asking them to move my appointment with the pediatrician forward as I explain that he's got an ongoing breathing problem and my appointment is in July. Anyway, I went to the gp and asked them if they received the letter. Aparatly the doctor didn't send anything to my boy Gp's. When trying to contact the hospital nobody was able to help. At this moment my baby still has an ongoing breathing problem and I hope he won't get blue one day due to negligence! Thank you very much for letting me leave a feedback as I'm very disappointed about the service they provided and scared at the same time.

  7. Review titled Great care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I visited the Same Day Emergency Care at Gloucester hospital last Saturday with my 91 year old mother and we couldn't have got better care. Both the nurses and Dr's gave their time and expertise always with good humour and a smile. As a retired nurse I appreciate the strains that the NHS is under but this team were able to look after my Mum without letting that show. Thank you so much.

  8. Review titled Dereliction of duty of care.

Rated 1 star out of 5

In brief. Referred to dermatology regarding large facial cyst by GP. Received an appointment fo 7 months later. Attended the appointment at the Aspen Centre. I was expecting to have cyst removed, but after a cursory examination i was told no I'd have to go on the waiting list. After asking waiting times, was told months to a year but it was down to the booking office. Told dermatologist that the cyst would have grown expediently by that time. They agreed but said after triarge they deemed it non essential. I told them I was going to be forced to remove it myself. I outlined my plan. They slightly correct my procedure for self operation and added I didn't have any anaesthetic which would be a problem. I was then advised to wait for them to operate and not self operate. Told them I had no option. I was then told I could go private ! ! I then asked why eight years ago with exactly the same cyst, I was operated on by my GP 2 months after the original GP diagnosis. Couldn't tell me why. In essence the waiting times now to have a large facial cyst removed is totally unacceptable. This situation is evidently a dereliction of duty of care by an organisation I've paid into all my working life. The evidence is in the timescale I've been given.

  9. Review titled They get the job done -somehow

Rated 3 stars out of 5

Attended for emergency surgery and all went well until someone decide to involve themselves in the process. As they hadn't checked on things properly i had to undergo another horribly painful groin exam (having had 2 already) carried out very clumsily, only to find that things were already in process for my operation. Not even an apology. Later when i said my post operative pain levels were causing problems where i might not be able to function alone at home i was fobbed and told thats the way it is. i was told i would receive proper pain management, which amounted to a load of various painkillers but no advice on how go about things (such managing the scar area etc) The whole experience left me wandering if the left hand knows where the right hand is, or indeed if patient care is the highest priority
