Review titled Excellent care and professionism
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Ann Anning - Posted on 21 May 2025
Yesterday (May 20, 2025), I was referred to the hospital by Saltash Health Centre to investigate my symptoms. I waited less than an hour in A & E, and then I received a number of tests, including an MRI scan. The results confirmed I needed a course of antibiotics, which I was able to obtain at the hospital pharmacy. I consider this experience an excellent example of the care, expertise and professionalism of the staff, and extend my sincere thanks to all concerned.

Review titled Frustrating waiting times - made up for in staff service
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Brandon - Posted on 07 May 2025
My partner and I have just returned home following a 10 hour stint at your department and both of us straight away asked the question how can we leave a review? The waiting times are something that I have become accustomed to in this modern climate, naturally, what that usually entails in most walks of life is staff members who are stressed and as a result patient service is diminished. However, that is not the case here. What we did experience was numerous volunteers who were a breath of fresh air and generous in offering tea and food to all patients. Generally speaking, what we experienced was that all staff members were professional and kind and demonstrated a high level of emotional intelligence. Derriford hospital A&E department is a reminder that regardless of the politics, waiting times and bureaucratic nonsense - the staff members are humans too, to elaborate, empathetic humans who are courageous in their line of work and utterly selfless. That was our experience at Derriford hospital A&E department. Now the specific reason for writing this review was to reiterate our thanks to a particular doctor who worked relentlessly and tirelessly in attempting to identify a diagnosis for my partners symptoms. His demeanour and mannerisms made her comfortable and made her feel as though she mattered and that she was being listened to. This was backed up with action in running a multitude of tests, carefully and considerately explaining the purpose for the tests and the results but also breaking down the medical jargon that came with the results. I would like to be contacted so that I can pass on specific details for our experience and possible identifiers that would mean the doctor can be contacted and informed of our praise and thanks. I would finally like to say that this particular doctor was a complete role model and I can only hope that other doctors follow his blueprint. I think the most important factor in any medical department is the patient having trust that the right thing is going to be done and that they can count on the professionals, this doctor in particular reinforced this trust and I would hope that any family member or close friend of mine may be assessed by him in the future. Overall despite the lengthy waiting times I think that the work of the staff members tonight should not go unnoticed, especially that of the doctor who assessed my partner.

Review titled Fabulous staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Linda - Posted on 12 April 2025
My experience from beginning to end surpassed my expectations. From my GP’s referral, I had been seen at Derriford within a week. Two weeks later, I’d had the procedure. All staff made me feel validated and safe, they were friendly, professional and all in all, was a very positive experience, I am most grateful.

Just returned from Derriford after a week with pneumonia. I cannot praise the staff highly enough for their cheerfulness and efficiency, also the choice of menus and food quality which together make an unpleasant experience much more tolerable.my only complaint is difficulty parking

Review titled NHS at its best
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 10 February 2025
Went for an appointment expecting to be referred for further tests. If fact ECG, neck scan and MRI all sorted within the day. Very impressed by the organisation, the joined up actions of different departments and the manner and courtesy of all staff, not only medical staff. OK it was a few hours in total but to organize and conduct such a comprehensive service in one visit was, in my view, well worth a big ' thank you'.

Review titled Brilliant paramedics
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 30 January 2025
Unfortunately I don't remember the names of the paramedics that attended me on the morning of 30th January 2025 from Derriford Hospital. I want to praise them both for the speed with which they arrived and their kind, caring and thoughtful manner in which they carried out their tests/checks and conversation about the issues I was facing. I thank them both for the work they do which they carry out under pressure every day. Thank you to all paramedics that do such a difficult job.

I am so pleased to read about your positive experience and the lovely things you have written. However, University Hospitals Plymouth do not have any responsibility for the paramedics I'm afraid, and I am sure they would love to hear your feedback. Review titled My overall experience was above and beyond
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Sue Small - Posted on 05 January 2025
From start to finish my whole experience was more than I could have ever expected. The paramedics that were looking after me all did amazing. From the doctors to the care staff, I couldn’t fault any of them. It was arranged for me to have live well come out to my home to carry on my treatment of IV antibiotics so I didn’t need to stay in hospital. I know this took some arranging and I’m very grateful for this. I just wanted to thank you all and let you know your work doesn’t go unnoticed.

Review titled Efficient
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 30 January 2025
Although I had to spend several hours in A&E for checks and tests and it appeared to be chaotic at times, it was very efficient and worked very well. The staff were very polite, kind, caring and efficient in the face of so many people waiting to be seen. Thank you Derriford Hospital A&E and Xray.

Review titled General overview
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Mark Veale - Posted on 02 November 2024
I was lucky as a day case to not stay longer than necessary. Staff couldn't find my pre-op notes before the op. The surgical team were brilliant, explaining everything and putting me at ease. However, after open inguinal surgery, the nursing team initially denied my request for something stronger than paracetamol for pain relief, claiming that there was none onsite. It was only after I stood my ground (and with the support of the anaesthetist) and explained that after open surgery, a stronger analgesia should be provided, rather than over the counter minor pain relief, that they relented and gave me 5 days worth of medication. I cannot help but feel for the others in similar situations to myself, who know no better, and have essentially been fobbed off with little in the way of adequate pain relief- it actually breaks my heart, as I saw much older patients being told that all they were getting was paracetamol for exactly the same surgery as mine.

Christopher Briggs, Consultant Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgeon has replied to say: I believe our standard aftercare for inguinal hernia surgery is for a combination of paracetamol and NSAIDs which the NHS expects patients to purchase themselves before surgery. However, if they do not have them they can be provided as a ward pack. You requested a stronger form of NSAID which we do not routinely keep on our ward and we had to send to pharmacy to get this – which we did at your request. If patients are intolerant of NSAIDS we offer alternatives such as co-codamol. I’m sorry you felt that we had not complied with your request and I also hope you are recovering well.
