  2. Review titled Amazing people

I just wanted to thank the staff who looked after me in the Colchester urgent treatment centre, also mainly the surgical assessment unit where I was triaged and waited for a wonderful ENT consultant to assess and admit me, all the night staff on the 16th-17th of May, including the staff on the SAU ward were amazing, they went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable due to the long wait, but I felt so safe and seen and heard and I’ve never been so grateful for such wonderful people looking after me and not making me feel silly as it was quite a scary new experience for me being a young woman I hope the staff who worked these shifts in these departments could be told how grateful I am. I was an ENT patient admitted into the SAU overnight after being in the urgent care centre. Whilst the NHS gets a lot of complaints as the system as a whole needs to improve from higher up due to how overstaffed overworked and overpopulated we are, I still feel so lucky to have got all of that treatment for free and it is really down to those staff working tirelessly all day and night, with positive energy and such a caring nature that made a difference and are a credit to our country. Thank you so much :)

  3. Review titled excellent care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I would like to thank all the staff at Elmstead Day Unit, Colchester Hospital. I was admitted for day surgery and throughout the day my care was exemplary. All the staff were caring, communicated well and responded rapidly to any concerns, questions and needs. I felt safe and supported. Special mention should go to my named nurse on the day (and I hope she is able to see this as I understand I cannot name her); she was available from start to finish and this familiar face was reassuring. The unit itself was very busy but staff coped well with a high workload. They are to be admired for their calm professionalism. In such a busy environment everyone did their best to ensure each patient had appropriate privacy when needed. The environment was clean and I observed cleaning staff immediately cleaned the area when a bed was vacated. Finally, although not members of the ward team I would also like to thank the staff member that took me down to surgery and who held my hand as I was given anaesthetic, managing to take my mind off the procedure about to take place. The recovery ward staff were supportive and sat with me as I regained consciousness. The hospital is to be praised for the service it is providing on this ward.

  5. Review titled I received excellent treatment

I found ENT to be an excellent team - professional and very good at putting you at ease - consultant listened - I didn't feel rushed at all and he also had a good sense of humour. After surgery the scar is hardly visible - and I was surprised and pleased how well I feel now.

  7. Review titled Great practice

I came for an appointment on 4th April. I was impressed by the smooth running service - from the organisation of the appointments for the ultrasound and the consultation (both appointments being on the same afternoon), to the communication between the professionals, including the prompt provision of the ultrasound report in preparation for the consultation. I appreciated the explanation about the process ahead of the ultrasound and examinations and appreciated the consideration shown for my dignity and comfort. I was provided with information throughout, I felt able to ask any questions and I was provided with the answers I needed. Thank you to the whole team, clinical and non-clinical staff.

I was dreading going to A&E after fainting a cutting my head due to previous experiences with waiting times. I needn’t have been. I was patched up and out in around an hour. Most of the staff were great. Particularly the lady who signed me in, the one who did my ECG and tests and the team in triage who patched me up quickly. Great job guys!

  10. Review titled Good Experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by John Robinson - Posted on 10 March 2025

My wife and I had the misfortune to attend the hospital's IAU Dept on Wednesday 5th March through Thursday 7th March, after my wife suffered a suspected heart attack. However, the only misfortune was the wait time. From the moment I dialled 999 the gentleman call handler was a dream, calm, re-assuring, completely professional in putting a panicing pair at ease, and staying on the line until the 2 lovely lady paramedics arrived within 30 minutes. The paramedics were again calming, re-assuring and so professional, the words still hang in my mind " Try and stay calm Annie, we're here, nothing's going to happen to you while we're here " Wife whisked off in the ambulance to hospital, I gathered a few essentials and made my way by car. By the time I arrived my wife was in an assessment bay, bloods done, now a lot calmer. Yes, now the waiting began, long gaps in between blood pressure checks, x-ray's visit from a doctor and pain relief via a drip. This now was the eye-opener, sitting here and there in various places as we were moved around as the staff tried to accommodate the increasing number of people coming in. Watching for so long these wonderful Doctor's and nurses at work, in effectively, a gold - fish bowl in full view of patients watching their every move and mannerism. Dealing with everything thrown at them, from the foul and abusive patients ( Only a Couple ) to the young and the old and everything in between, the staff dealt with them all with equal respect, understanding and skills. Despite the excruciating wait times we were constantly re-assured and put at ease, as the never ending cycle of patient after patient came through the doors. When you think of the 12 hour shifts of constant pressure with the quick grab of a bite to eat or the slurp of a much needed drink. When you think of these prima-dona footballers earning £350,000 per week or more and as much as I sympathise with the people of Ukraine and other embattled countries that receive billions of our money in Foreign Aid, when are we going to look after our own and put the money into the NHS and their wonderful dedicated staff. So yes, the wait was painfully long, but it wasn't the fault of the staff, just the system. So from my wife ( thankfully recovered ) and I, a massive ' Thank You ' to the 999 Call Handler, the 2 lovely lady paramedics, to the nurses and doctors, the Porters, the Tea Lady and the lovely nurse who handed out her own Chocolate Digestives to all in the IAU waiting area, and kept us all smiling with her lovely demeanour, to the lovely lady doctor who delivered the final " It wasn't a heart attack, and you can go home "with medication and a follow up appointment. and don't forget, all that attention and help was free. It's about time we started paying these brilliant dedicated ( why else would they do it ) individuals what they are really worth.
