  4. Review titled Poor practice

Rated 2 stars out of 5

I don't mind paying for dental work but I thought cleaning was supposed to be In with the charge if the dentist thinks it's needed. I am always told to book appointment with the hygienist which involves an extra charge. Today I was told that I needed to pay upfront for this which is inconvenient when on pension and having use taxis as well. Well I hope they enjoy old folks going without food just because their teeth need an extra clean. Will have to reconsider using them but I suppose the waiting list for another dental practice is too long so I'm stuck but not happy.

Dear Ann, I am sad to read that being asked to pay a deposit to secure your appointment with the hygienist has caused you such offence to leave us a review like this. As per practice policy, it is essential that patients pay a small fee to secure their appointment with the hygienist. This is for all patients and a very common practice amongst all dental practices. Whilst I am unsure if you are booked to have treatment with the Hygienist as part of treatment on the NHS or whether this appointment is purely private, I would like to offer you some reassurance here. As few collectors for NHS dental services, we have the right to request full payment upfront, part payment or full payment upon delivery of service. We consider ourselves fair to our patients and their financial situations, whatever they may be, and equally fair to the services and the management of the resources we provide. Therefore, we only request payment upfront as a deposit for service and then the remainder of payment upon completion of treatment. To us this is fair, fair to you and fair to our duties to our NHS obligations and to our great private services we provide to our patients whom value the service we provide. Practice policies are in place to protect the quality of services we provide. I am sorry on this occasion a policy that serves all our patients has caused you such dissatisfaction. If you would like to discuss your experience with me in more detail I would be happy to hear from you. Yours sincerely, Lisa Emery

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Claire Morris - Posted on 17 August 2022

Having a genetic dental disorder I've had a lot of dental problems throughout my life and seen a lot of dentists. I've been at Wolstanton Dental is probably the best I've been too. I've been under them for several years and I have no intention of leaving. Excellent, friendly care & support with great dentistry.

  7. Review titled Avoid this practice!

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Ron Hattersley - Posted on 12 July 2022

Due to the closure of our dental practice, my family have been on the NHS waiting list with this practice since April 2021 at which point we were told the waiting time was approx 15 months. In April this year I called to enquire if and when we would be seen, and was told we are scheduled for around August this year, 2022. I had fillings which had failed and was advised to obtain a DIY filling kit, and duly bought a DenTek kit ( just ordered my 4th kit!). Today I called hoping we would soon be given appointments, but was told they are now at full capacity and have run out of NHS funding, and the wait time is now 2 years!. I asked to speak to the owner, and did so, only to be told over and over again that they have no NHS funding, and he could not even give me an estimate of how long we would have to wait. I told him repeatedly that in April this year I was told by his staff that we are due to be seen in August, and he was not interested at all, not even sympathetic to the issue. He was just so arrogant, claiming they are at full capacity and have no funding. So, we have wasted 16 months waiting to be seen by this practice, and now have to wait an unknown amount of time to be seen by them, and was told by this owner to look for other practices; he couldn't care less! Personally I think the practice has other problems: I recall in April the receptionist telling me that one of their dentists was leaving, and today the lady I first spoke with told me one of their dentists was retiring. So, if you are on the waiting list with this practice, patiently waiting like we have for 16 months, then I would look elsewhere and avoid this practice! The owner was the most uncaring health professional I have ever spoke to, and trust me I know a lot of senior health professionals and managers.

Dear Mr Hattersley, Since the closure of your practice you experienced dental pain I am pleased that our team offered you advice to help you whilst you joined our new patient waiting list. Wait times are an estimation circumstances in practice affect this waiting time such as staffing and the dentists taking holiday leave. Due to the pandemic, the way we treat our patients in order to reduce the risk of contracting Covid-19,takes more time per patient reducing the amount of patients we see per day. This created a backlog of our existing patients that we have a current duty of care to and must prioritise. I understand your disappointment, but our team are working to get through the waiting list in a safe manner. The funding we receive has an impact on how quickly we can move through the waiting list. All dental practices offering NHS dental services are under contract. This contract sets the financial perimeters and we cannot go over this amount. We duly manage our funding and cannot control in terms of meeting demand that is out there for patients. When your practice closed it left a large amount of patients without anywhere to go in a situation where NHS dental services were already struggling to meet the need. This is a stressful predicament for patients & practices, I am sorry if you feel you were not met with sympathy, be assured NHS England are working to increase access after the most difficult time NHS healthcare has faced. Despite not being a patient you make references to the problems we have. Due to the difficulties faced with healthcare and with respect to the pandemic, many dentists have chosen to leave the NHS and this has created a National shortage. It is not a singular problem for us, it is a national issue all practices face. Since 2021 we have had one of our dentist’s take maternity leave and another has opted to take retirement from the NHS, but has since returned to work on short term arrangement to help out because of the practice we are and to service our great patients. I am sorry that you are not fully aware of the national issues with dental services, it is not something that gets enough coverage, I hope this response helps you understand the broader picture. Dr Najran advised,if you would like to remain on our waiting list we are happy to offer you a new patient appointment to you, but it will be later than August. If you are experiencing pain you have the choice to seek alternative options that have always been available to you and we would encourage you to go where the waiting list is less, this is what we advise for your best interests. I would like to have a discussion with you once you have read this response with consideration to the circumstances we are working in, which you may not have been aware of before writing this review and if you think that the extended wait (estimate November) is manageable for you, if not we apologise for falling short of your expectations and wish you well with your healthcare. Lisa Emery
