I was initially told there was a 2 year waiting list for my disabled son to be seen here. I explained he had a broken tooth then was told he would a re-referral to say he has a learning disability even though he is on their system. So I took him privately to a regular dentist, who referred him to the hospital as he would need sedation for an extraction. The hospital refused to treat my son saying he needs to be referred via somerstown special dentist. Nobody contacted me and it was only the private dentist that rang me to followed up asking had we been contacted. So I rang Somerstown dentist and they said they hadn’t received anything concerning my son. So contacted his social worker, she contacted somerstown special dentist and my son was finally given an appointment. He attended and it was agreed, he would need sedation and they would do the extraction and any other work necessary. There was a best interest meeting and all the paperwork was filled in. I was told there was a bit of a wait, well it’s been a couple of months and heard nothing and last night my non verbal son pointed to his tooth indicating pain. So I ring up this practice there is a strange message apologising for not answering but to keep trying. So I did, someone answers and I explained my son was in pain and I was told oh we are not doing any dentistry as there is building works for the next two weeks. I said he’s in pain then I was asked do you think it’s an emergency if so we will see him but he will get antibiotics if there’s an infection. I am not a dentist please don’t put it back on me, he needs the treatment that was agreed, I have heard nothing for 2 months. And they are prioritising building work over his treatment. Where’s the duty of care, why has no alternative place been arranged. My son has no choice of going to an alternative dentist and this has been going backwards and forwards for nearly 6 months. He’s clearly in pain it’s agreed he needs treatment and how he’s to be treated but can some action be taken so he is treated and out of pain. If I left my dog in pain with a broken tooth I would be charged with neglect and quite rightly so. Yet leaving a disabled person in pain for months with a broken tooth seems to be acceptable. I quite shocked at the lack of treatment and care. How many other disabled people are being left in pain. This needs sorting as it impacts my sons sleep, he is struggling to eat and holding his head in his hands. Something is very wrong and broken at this place please can someone fix this practice, it’s not doing what it should be doing.
