  1. Review titled Trying to push me elsewhere

by Anonymous - Posted on 26 March 2024

I recently sought support from the NHS psychiatry services during a very vulnerable period in my life. Unfortunately, my experience was deeply disheartening. From the outset, it felt as though the team was disengaged and lacked genuine interest in my mental health. A critical aspect of my struggle involves the impact of racism and gaslighting on my mental health, an area where I felt there was a glaring lack of understanding or empathy. It seemed to me that there was no lived experience within the team to truly comprehend the nuances of how racism exacerbates mental health issues. Additionally, during a moment of extreme vulnerability, when I disclosed that I had attempted to take my own life, the response was cold and procedural. Instead of offering the in-depth support I expected and needed, the decision was made to refer me back to the community team via a phone call. This felt like a dismissal, a way to quickly move me out of their responsibility, rather than an effort to provide appropriate care. It's disheartening and frankly unacceptable that individuals seeking help during their lowest points are met with such an apparent lack of compassion and understanding. Mental health services should be a place of refuge and understanding, where every patient feels heard, understood, and supported, regardless of their background or the nature of their struggles. Unfortunately, my experience was far from this ideal.
