Nobody wants to have a detached retina and almost go blind, which is what happened to me in February… I have suddenly been thrown into contact with this team, and have had two rounds of eye surgery and been referred for a third, attended the eye clinic in Calderdale three times and in Kirklees once… The service is pretty much faultless. Everybody is helpful, competent and professional, from the lead consultants to the healthcare assistants. I first arrived through A&E and I was very scared, and people were extraordinarily kind. The clinical specialists and the support staff are skilled, efficient and effective. The team works smoothly, and coordination and communication are good. My surgery was done well, and although my experience on the day surgery ward wasn’t as good as in the ophthalmology department, the outcome has been good. The atmosphere when you visit the department is really good - several staff members complimented their colleagues to me, and the mutual respect is clear. As far as I’m concerned, this is a really outstanding hospital service - probably the best I have ever used (and I have multiple needs so I use different NHS services a lot!). If it’s not already a centre of excellence, I reckon it could be. I count myself very lucky, given the serious problem that I had, to have had this particular ophthalmology department to look after me.
