WeKare cared for my mother for the last year of her life. They were beyond exceptional - really unbelievably wonderful. It was not an easy brief, since Mum was very resistant to having any carers. But from the start the manager and the team showed such remarkable skills of listening, watching and caring that Mum was won over in no time. They were the only people outside the family who could communicate with her and understand what she was trying to convey. On hospital visits and with the district nurses they fearlessly advocated for her with the medical team to ensure she got the best of care. In better times, they constantly thought of nice trips that could be conducted safely and enjoyably for Mum. When she was able to do physio, they worked really hard with the physio to help her to improve her mobility. They provided her with joy in the hardest of times (one carer could make a statue laugh) and us with support beyond measure. Always they retained sight of her as a person, who still had views and preferences which needed to be inferred even when she couldn't communicate verbally and had limited physical control; and remembered she was someone whose views had to be respected. They helped educate other carers joining the team on how to make her life as pleasant as it possibly could be. As the end approached they carefully and kindly gave us the heads up for each approaching milestone so we were ready. And at the end they cut ruthlessly into their own time to come and say goodbye, and to support us in the immediate aftermath of the death. One could not ask for better, more thoughtful and more loving care.
