Review titled Inadequate Health Check
Rated 1 star out of 5
by F.Matin - Posted on 12 December 2024
I booked in for a Health Check; the appointment was perfunctory, to say the least. No height taken and was asked to briefly self evaluate my diet and activity levels without any meaningful discussion. Advice given around weight loss was tone deaf and patronising, being told that “if you want it bad enough it will happen” with no consideration of the barriers faced, i.e being a carer, pre-existing conditions. The whole experience was utterly demotivating; my health concerns weren’t listened to, no proper plan discussed about how I might reduce health risks, no other support offered in the form of local options. Left the appointment with generic, and quite frankly questionable advice to “cut out carbs and eat a salad”. I was also told that my ideal weight loss goal of a stone “wasn’t that much”. I was clearly just one more appointment this health care “professional” had to get through in the day. We are constantly reminded that the NHS is under great strain; the Health Check is an opportunity for prevention, so you feel supported to make necessary changes to improve your health and reduce your risk of developing health problems, and therefore be potentially less reliant on NHS services; however this disappointing experience was anything but, and clearly just a ‘tick box exercise’.
