  1. Review titled A wonderful service

    by Family@110 - Posted on 20 July 2023

My grandmother fell whilst at home and was admitted to hospital for further investigation. She stayed in hospital for 2 weeks before being discharged. The hospital team were fantastic and with their help we arranged for a care package to be in place to support my grandmother in her home. For the first two weeks, we received a telephone call every few days from the virtual ward nurse. My grandmother and I found this to be very reassuring as it was good to be able to chat through any concerns that we had. We felt supported and valued. Huge thanks to the team for such a wonderful service.

  2. Review titled Friendly and reassuring staff

    by woodpigeondh84 - Posted on 11 April 2023

I am in my late 70s and I suffer from advanced prostate cancer. I am currently receiving hormone treatment for this. I consider myself a bit of a success story, having survived 14 years with the disease so far! I thought I had escaped Covid after several close brushes with the disease over the past few years, but I caught it on a trip to London recently. As my immune system has been compromised, I was expecting a rough ride. I got one. My wife developed the illness three days after me. To be honest I felt lousy for about three days with cough, cold symptoms, loss of appetite and slightly elevated temperature. When the Virtual Covid Ward contacted me I felt greatly relieved. It is so difficult to get hold of a doctor these days and to receive a call from a friendly nurse every couple of days with questions and advice was immensely reassuring. I have now completely recovered except for taste (mainly coffee). My wife is also feeling better than she was. Thanks guys!

  3. Review titled Excellent virtual ward support following hospital discharge

    by cepheuswq63 - Posted on 16 May 2023

I was contacted by the virtual ward on the evening of my elderly dad's discharge. He had become quite dependant and institutionalised during his 19 day hospital stay and so bringing him home was quite daunting. I felt very reassured to speak to a dedicated health professional who knew the details of dad's condition and had time to listen to my concerns and answer my questions. I really appreciated the sound, practical advice and the follow up calls. This is such an excellent & valuable service. Thank you!

  4. Review titled Excellent support

by Upton - Posted on 20 July 2023

When my mum was discharged from hospital after a short spell with confusion and an infection we were placed under the care of the virtual wards team. We received excellent support from every member of the virtual ward team with daily telephone calls to check how mum was doing, checking her stats and general recovery. We were readmitted to hosptial after a couple of days at the advice of the virtual ward team as oxygen levels were low and then back under their care when discharged again a few days later. The virtual wards team arranged for the urgent community care response nurses to visit, liaised with our GP and the heart failure team and gave me - as mum's primary carer - much needed support and guidance as to what I should be looking out for. The virtual wards team gave me the confidence and support I needed to care for mum at home and provided a secure stepping stone from hospital to getting her back home and under the care of the GP. The 7 days a week 8am-8pm telephone service was invaluable and helped me to know that I wasn't alone if I had any concerns - especially over weekends. I would like to thank every member of the virtual wards team that looked after my mum (and me as carer) during what was a very difficult and worrying time. Having one point of contact and someone to liaise with all the other care team staff e.g. heart failure team, GP and urgent response team was also especially helpful. I would not have felt confident caring for mum having been discharged from hospital had I not had the support of the virtual ward team. I think it's an excellent service and enables patients to get back to their home surroundings with the security of still being overseen by the hospital team. Many thanks

  5. Review titled Reassuring me that help was just a call away

    by pictorbc73 - Posted on 05 May 2023

I was feeling pretty rough on the Saturday, a bit like flu ,cold inside and very warm outside of my body. I took paracetamol and went to bed sleeping on and off all night. Sunday I felt really rough, so much that I just couldn't sum up the energy to visit my husband in his care home, I was coughing and very breathless, I got through the day but that night I was coughing all night, not sleeping, it was a dry cough. By early Monday I'd had enough and rang 111, they took me to hospital and I was in ICU all day, bloods, monitoring etc. I was put on oxygen and electrical nebuliser Salbutamol and spent 5 days in hospital. COPD was the outcome, gradually my breathing settled down and armed with a new inhaler etc I was allowed home on the Friday. I was followed up with several calls from the Virtual Ward making sure I was ok and no returning symptoms, this is a new one on me and what a brilliant idea, no trips to the hospital, but reassuring me that help was just a call away should I need it. Just a phone call, not a bevvy of nurses flitting from one to another, no waiting for hours, no buses to get, saving time and freeing up staff. Great.

  6. Review titled Virtual ward support

    by homamtt66 - Posted on 29 March 2023

I started what seemed to be a cold but when pinged about a covid19 contact I tested and was positive. I would not have thought to enquire about any treatment but my son who works in the biomedical sector prompted me to. As I am on targeted anti-cancer therapy, I rang the Oncology team at RHCH and was told I had done the right thing, although I was already starting to feel better. Within the afternoon I was contacted by the Virtual Covid ward and a 5 day course of antivirals was couriered to my home the next day. I was then followed up by phone by the Virtual Ward team, checking on my symptoms. When I had finished the course and tested negative for two days I was discharged.

  7. Review titled The back up they give is second to none

    by plutoxw84 - Posted on 30 March 2023

My Husband was taken to the North Hampshire Hospital unable to swallow and with breathing difficulties due to a chest infection. He has COPD. During his stay there he received excellent care from everyone, from consultants to health care assistants. However it was felt that the ward he was on was not good for his mental health, so as soon as he could eat solid food and was a little better we were asked if he could come home and be on a virtual ward. This meant that he was still under the care of the hospital and one of the nursing team would be in regular contact. I would be given a contact number for if I felt I needed help. We agreed to this and the next day he came home. I was given a list of what meds he had to take and when. The following day I received a call from the virtual hub and several times in the following week. They listened to everything I had to say and gave advice when asked for. They were absolutely amazing! I cannot praise North Hampshire Hospital and the Virtual Hub team enough! I think the Virtual Ward is a wonderful idea, the back up they give is second to none. With the the patient in their own home they are happier and more relaxed, which possibly leads to a better recovery.

  8. Review titled I had very regular contact

    by avocetcf99 - Posted on 05 April 2023

I am considered vulnerable as I'm still receiving treatment for breast cancer and I tested positive for Covid. I was scared, nervous and uncertain of what would happen I felt dreadful, weak with flu like symptoms I called the Acute Oncology phone line, who referred me to the virtual ward. I had very regular contact, was given easy to follow advice and asked if I could please let them know when I had a negative result. I was able to do this after 5/6 days. They were so grateful for the information as, apparently, not everyone bothers to tell them!! I was treated with nothing but respect and kindness. Made the whole experience much easier to cope with.

  9. Review titled A fantastic service

    by 767papalema - Posted on 27 April 2023

After an unplanned admission to the Orthopedic ward in Basingstoke and ankle arthroscopy under general anaesthetic, I was discharged the next day with limited instructions. I then had an unexpected but most welcome call from the virtual ward the following day. Having this contact and subsequent access to help between 8am to 8pm if needed made me feel like I wasn’t just sent out into the ether. Subsequent follow up calls after each consultant appointment to make sure everything was ok and I was happy with my treatment was a continued unexpected but most reassuring service. Discharge from the ward was only made after discussion with me that I was happy for this to happen. The team I spoke to were clear and conscientious and when I did need advice came back to me once a clinicians opinion had been sought and very quickly, which I was grateful for. A fantastic service which I do think should be advised to patients on discharge from hospital so that you know there is still help available.

  10. Review titled Support from the virtual ward

    by lotiondd53 - Posted on 08 March 2023

I have COPD and spent 8 days as an in-patient being treated for pneumonia. I came home on Wednesday evening and the virtual ward phoned me on Friday morning to see how I was and to explain they would be available to advise me for a week. It was reassuring to know that I could contact someone if I had any worries. They phoned me again on Sunday and I was able to tell them my lungs were still not clear but I was feeling better. By Tuesday I had developed a cough and a rash on my feet and ankles which I thought to be cellulitis. I rang the ward and discussed this with them, we agreed I would contact my GP for diagnosis. Again it was helpful to talk to someone about this. As I did not have any severe symptoms I don’t know what the virtual ward would have done. As it was my doctor confirmed cellulitis and gave me more antibiotics to treat this and continued infection of my lungs. I don’t feel the virtual ward could help with this.
