I would like to thank everybody who looked after me at the Thornbury Hospital, The Surgeon.Anaesthetist,Theatre Staff, Ward Sisters and Nurses. The catering staff and everybody else I came into contact with. I was looked after magnificently from start to finish. I am now on the way to full recovery and to receive a phone call from the physiotherapist yesterday to see that I was okay tops it all. Five star from start to finish thank you all so very very much

  2. Review titled Mirrors

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mrs C. Fawcett - Posted on 08 February 2024

The quality of the Consultants and Doctors at Thornbury is, in my opinion, outstanding. It's a great pity however that I cannot say the same for the management. Changes in the interior design/layout have been taking place and, much to my amazement, I'm told that the total lack of mirrors in the toilets was a management directive. Whilst there appear to be mirrors in the Consultants' rooms there are none in the toilets used by patients or staff. Hence patients are unable to check their appearance before meeting a Consultant, and nurses and other staff cannot do the same prior to meeting potential and existing clients. Does "the management" believe that only women like to ensure that the wind outside has not blown their hair into a mess and if so do they dislike women (like me) so much that they have had all the mirrors (that we have always relied upon) removed? Aren't mirrors usually standard in W/Cs? I also have news for them, many male patients (and staff who meet the public) also like to ensure that their appearance is acceptable to them !!! It is perhaps worth my adding that, as an old aged pensioner, I still like to check my hair and make-up prior to entering the Consulting suite/rooms. Am I deluded in thinking that other patients (and the staff) do too?

Dear Mrs Fawcett Thank you for your comments and observations. Firstly may i thank you for the kind comments about the consultants at Thornbury and recognising the fantastic work they do at our hospital. I'm disappointed to read your comments regarding the patient facing toilets we have at the hospital. Hopefully you have noticed that they have been refurbished as part of our on going developments and upgrades. As part of this development within the toilets the provision to have mirrors was not part of the scheme. Unfortunately we were not permitted to replace the mirrors in the 'public toilets', this was a directive as part of Health & Safety. I completely appreciate your comments and the use of mirrors, unfortunately for us to comply with regulations this is something we had to do. I hope you understand that this was not a decision taken by the Thornbury management team, but simply following the directive given to us. I would like to reassure you that all patient bedrooms do have mirrors in them as part of the bathroom upgrade. Kind Regards Kosta Antoniou Executive Director - Thornbury Hospital.

  4. Review titled "Great practice" from a wonderful team!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 29 February 2024

I could not have wished for a better orthorpaedic surgeon, anaesthetist and wonderful theatre nurses when I had my knee replacement at Thornbury Hospital. I feel very privileged to have been cared for by such a great team, second to none and I cannot thank them enough and would recommend them to anyone in my position facing surgery. During my treatment I have also met with a great physiotherapist team and lovely catering staff and most caring nurses though sadly not all. I found the first nurse that was allocated to my care to be confrontational and argumentative which made me feel anxious prior to my operation and not very helpful afterwards and did not enjoy meeting her. However everyone else had a professional and helpful attitude and it was lovely to be greeted by their smiling faces and I appreciated their kindness and care.

  5. Review titled Great Oncology Department

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Margaret Booth - Posted on 13 April 2024

In January I had a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy at Thornbury after which I made an excellent recovery. I was then referred to the Oncology department. I am currently halfway through my 6 sessions of Chemotherapy. I could not have been placed with more kind and caring professionals. All the team are always there with a smile and reassurance. Time is given to answer any questions I might have. The staff explain each stage of the procedure on the day of treatment. I couldn't be receiving better care. My whole experience at Thornbury both as an inpatient and currently on a day basis has been 5 star.

  7. Review titled Some simple fixes would have led to an enhanced experience

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Sharon Woolf - Posted on 16 November 2023

I'm a self pay patient who had hip replacement surgery. Some aspects of this hospital are good eg food, people serving food, most of the nurses and a member of the customer services team who went above and beyond to help when I left. Things I did not like are: the surgeon who reduced me to tears just before surgery because he claimed he'd told me not to get any marks or scratches on my leg. I don't think he did tell me because I am really good at following instructions, especially if they relate to my health and my interaction with my cats. I understand why he was annoyed but there is no point in speaking harshly to a someone who is about to undergo surgery to the point that the patient cries. He needs to think about the tone of voice he uses and his choice of words. He'd seen me on 3rd Nov and did not do a physical examination of my skin then. Also, if something is important, like not having marks from pets' claws on the skin, this information should be given to patients by email or via a handout in clinic. He wants me to see him again in Jan but I probably won't go, because I don't need to be in the room with a man who has been unpleasant to me. My money - my body - my choice. Patients should be considered holistically and even if you are a surgeon how you speak to someone can trigger them emotionally - I don't respond well to shouty angry men who try to make me feel rubbish about myself. People undergoing surgery are highly likely to be nervous/ anxious / scared and really don't need a doctor to compound those emotions. The physio I saw spoke really fast, like she was just gabbling routine instructions. I'm hearing impaired and she didn't check whether her communication was appropriate / helpful to me. I worked with AHPs for 7 years and she's been a physio for nearly 20 years so I know what she's meant to do, and she should be able to work in a person-centred way with someone who is hearing impaired. On the day I left, I was in the bathroom and I needed to pull the emergency cord to get help getting dressed. Nobody had asked me if I needed help dressing. Having pulled the emergency cord in the bathroom it took over 2 mins for someone to come to my room to help. Just as well I wasn't lying on the floor - but they didn't know that until they came in. This could have been avoided had they provided a grabber in my room, which is what people need to pull up underwear and trousers/leggings after hip surgery and would support patient independence. It's a private hospital so why are grabbers not provided in the rooms? A nurse told me that they used to have them on the ward.
