Preparing for weight loss surgery

Assessment before weight loss surgery

Before you can have weight loss surgery, your GP will refer you to a team of specialists.

They will assess your:

  • physical health – using blood and urine tests, X-rays and scans to check for things like blood clots, ulcers and hernias
  • mental wellbeing – including your ability to cope with the long-term lifestyle changes needed after weight loss surgery, including attending follow-up appointments and taking supplements
  • eating patterns and diet – including how you've already tried to lose weight

These checks will help decide whether you're suitable for weight loss surgery and which type of surgery would be recommended.
