Stay Well This Winter

If weather reports are anything to go by we could be in for a very cold winter.

When we’re facing cold spells, wrap up warm, check in on your vulnerable neighbours and keep a stock of over the counter medicines at home.

Make your local pharmacy your first point of call.

There’s often no need for a GP appointment or a trip to A&E – the pharmacy can give you professional and friendly advice and will either find a solution for you or put you in touch with someone who can.

Your local pharmacy stocks a wide range of over the counter medicines, dispenses private and NHS prescriptions and is open 7 days a week to offer you health advice.

Haslemere Pharmacy Supports NHS Blood in Pee Campaign

nhs

Did you know that blood in your pee could be a sign of bladder or kidney cancer?  The NHS’s Be Clear on Cancer campaign is focusing on bladder and kidney cancer throughout February and March and are urging you to visit your GP if you notice blood in your pee, even if you only see it once.

“It’s likely to be nothing serious,” said Oormi Rahman, Pharmacy Manager at Haslemere Pharmacy, “but if it is cancer, the earlier you find out the more treatable it makes it.”

Each year in England around 17,450 people are diagnosed with bladder or kidney cancer and whilst these cancers can affect people of all ages, they are most common in those over 50.

“There are other symptoms to consider, but you won’t be wasting anyone’s time by getting checked out as soon as you notice this sign,” said Oormi.  “And remember there are many things you can do to help reduce your chances of getting bladder or kidney cancer.”

“Stop smoking!  Maintain a healthy weight! Keep active! Eat healthily!”

The team at Haslemere Pharmacy can help and support you to make healthy lifestyle choices for you and your family.  Just call in and have a chat with a member of the team.  Open early til late, 7 days a week!

Haslemere Pharmacy Offers Hay Fever Advice

Hayfever

Spring is here and for most of us we look forward to enjoying being out in the fresh air.  But for 15 million hay fever sufferers in the UK, the season can bring with it sneezing, runny noses and itchy eyes.

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen.  The majority of sufferers are allergic to grass pollen and can experience symptoms from April through to August.

Haslemere Pharmacy’s Manager Oormi Rahman said, “For some, symptoms are mild but for many others hay fever can cause discomfort and irritability.”

Many cases of hay fever can be controlled using over the counter medicine.  “Whether you’ve been prescribed medication by your GP or you want advice on how to treat your symptoms, the team at Haslemere Pharmacy can help.”

“Depending on the severity of the symptoms, we might suggest a nasal spray, eye drops or antihistamine tablets”, said Oormi.

If over the counter treatments don’t give you the relief you’re looking for, the Pharmacist will advise you to see your GP.

Oormi says, “People must be cautious with taking any medicine.  Pop in to see us for your hay fever advice. We’re open long hours and an appointment isn’t always necessary!”

Haslemere Pharmacy Supports Good Sexual Health

Haslemere Pharmacy is a discreet first port of call for support and advice in maintaining good sexual health.

The team at Haslemere Pharmacy can offer advice on all aspects of good sexual health, from the emergency contraceptive pill and erectile dysfunction to sexually transmitted infections and ensuring you are practicing safe sex.

“If you have had unprotected sex or if your contraceptive method has failed, emergency contraception, or ‘the morning after pill’, can be used to prevent pregnancy”, said Oormi Rahman, Pharmacy Manager.  “There are different types of contraceptive pill available and we can advise you on the best option for you.”

It’s estimated that half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 will, to some degree, have erectile dysfunction or impotence.  The team at Haslemere Pharmacy can give advice on making changes to your lifestyle that might improve the symptoms such as stopping smoking, losing weight and taking regular exercise.

One of the most common sexually transmitted infections is Chlamydia.  “Many people don’t have any symptoms so are unaware that they are infected.” said Oormi.  “Chlamydia can be easily diagnosed with either a urine test or a swab of the infected area and is easily treated with antibiotics.”

Pharmacy Manager, Oormi Rahman said, “No appointment is necessary and you can speak with our Pharmacist in the privacy of a consultation room, without being overheard.”

To find out more about Haslemere Pharmacy’s services, visit www.haslemerepharmacy.co.uk, follow us on Twitter @haslemerepharm, find us on Facebook or call in and speak to us at Haslemere Pharmacy, Haslemere Health Centre, Church Lane, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 2BQ.  Telephone 01428 656143.

Haslemere Pharmacy Backs Alcohol Awareness Month

Haslemere Pharmacy is supporting Alcohol Concern’s Dry January campaign by encouraging people to visit the pharmacy and access a free NHS service which gives advice on alcohol intake.

During Dry January, people will be encouraged to stop drinking alcohol.

Pharmacy Manager Oormi Rahman said  “Haslemere Pharmacy is accessible and convenient and is ideally placed to help improve public health. Our Pharmacists and staff can offer advice as part of a standardized intervention called alcohol intervention and brief advice (IBA) which assesses an individual’s drinking habits and offers effective structured advice.”

Get a better understanding of your drinking habits and the effects these have on your health. Most people have heard about alcohol units but many are unaware of what these actually mean. This service is free and our pharmacy team can give advice and refer people on to other healthcare professionals if they need further help.”

Haslemere Pharmacy highlights National Bug Busting Day

bug busting

Staff at Haslemere Pharmacy are highlighting the upcoming National Bug Busting Day by reminding parents to remain vigilant about head lice.

National Bug Busting Day, on 31 January, aims to encourage parents to check, find and “zap” all head lice in one fell swoop, preventing any further contagion.

Oormi Rahman, manager at Haslemere Pharmacy, said: “It’s really important for parents with school-age children to be aware of the risk of head lice. They are extremely contagious and, quite often, will go unnoticed and undetected for at least a month.

“We offer a range of products for head lice prevention and treatment, and can advise on how best to use them to eradicate the lice and eggs. A coordinated combing effort is a great way to break the head lice cycle, so we hope lots of families will join in.”

National Bug Busting Day was set up by registered charity Community Hygiene Concern CHC, who seek to protect people, particularly children and pets, from parasites found in the UK.

Electronic Prescription Service

This pharmacy offers the Electronic Prescription Service, which allows you to choose or “nominate” a pharmacy to get your medicines or appliances from. Your GP then sends your prescription electronically to the place you have nominated, this means:

  • If you collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP you will not have to visit your GP practice to pick up your paper prescription, saving you time.
  • You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop.
  • You may not have to wait as long at the pharmacy as your repeat prescriptions could be prepared before you arrive.
