The Neuro Network secures funding to carry out new care model

The Neuro Network holds engagement session

The Walton Centre has received £397,000 for its part in a national NHS programme which is aimed at transforming the way health and care is delivered across England.

The money has been given to The Neuro Network as one of the selected ‘Vanguards’ for the New Care Models Programme which is playing a key part in the delivery of the Five Year Forward View – the vision for the future of the NHS.

Vanguards are leading on developing new care models that will act as blueprints for the future of the health and care system in England.

There are 50 vanguards across the country which will deliver an array of benefits for patients including providing care closer to where people live.

The money, which covers the year 2015/16, is being drawn from a national £200 million NHS transformation fund.

It adds to around £300,000 already secured by The Neuro Network as part of the programme.

Vanguards are also receiving practical assistance as part of a package of national support announced in the summer to enable them to make the changes they want at pace.

Samantha Jones, Director – New Care Models Programme, said: “We are pleased to be able to support The Neuro Network with both financial and practical support.

“The changes they have planned will help deliver a raft of benefits for patients, local people and staff.  We are also supporting them to help spread good practice across the wider NHS and social care community.”

The Walton Centre was chosen to be an NHS Vanguard back in September 2015 when it bid for the status.

The Trust is one of 13 new NHS Vanguards called Acute Care Collaboratives, along with hospitals such as Moorfields, the Royal Marsden and the Christie.

The move will see The Walton Centre work closely with other hospitals, GPs and community services to improve quality and reduce variations in standards, ultimately benefiting patients with neuro and spinal conditions.

Greater collaboration throughout the NHS is central to NHS England’s Five Year Forward View for the NHS as general hospitals find it increasingly difficult to provide a full range of services on their own.

The Walton Centre provides neurology services at district general hospitals across Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales, holding clinics and helping look after patients on the wards.

As a Vanguard, The Walton Centre, working with partners, gets national support to develop its collaborations on neurology further. The Neuro Network is also planning to establish a spinal provider network to further improve care for patients with back problems, increase specialist support and advice currently given to GPs and local hospitals, and provide additional specialist nursing support in the community.

The NHS Five Year Forward View is a partnership between NHS England, Monitor, the Care Quality Commission, The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Health Educational England, Public Health England and the NHS Trust Development Authority.

Notes to editors:

The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust is the only hospital trust in the UK specialising in neurology, neurosurgery and pain services. Although the majority of patients come from Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, Lancashire and the Isle of Man, for some specialist treatments of complex disorders we see patients from all parts of the country, referred by their GPs or other neurologists, neurosurgeons and pain clinicians.
