  • PPG raises funds to enhance service to patients

We are a very approachable, caring and friendly team of professionals who put our patients' care at the heart of what we do.  Our Practice continues to grow, year on year, and we have a very active and supportive Patient Participation Group - our Acorn Patient Team - who work closely with us to improve services to all our patients and to ensure we maintain high standards throughout.

Our philosopy is to strive to provide the same quality of care we would normally expect our own families to receive.  The Practice team makes its best endeavours  to deliver care that is tailored to each invididual patient's needs in a caring, safe and empathic way.

We are a 'listening practice' - always prepared to change and grow using feedback from the people who use our services.  We put our patients' views high on our priorities and respond to any comments, good or not so good, in a positive way so that we can be focussed on continuous service improvement.

We have Carers Champion to ensure we are offering support to and caring for those of our patients who are carers for others, perhaps a relative, friend or neighbour.  We do this to make sure our Carers are cared for too!

If you would like to become a member of our Carers Team or our join our Patient Group, please contact the Practice Manager on 01480 483100 or email

If you are looking for a new GP Practice and would like to visit us to look around and ask questions before making a decision, we would be delighted to see you.  Please contact the surgery to make arrangements for a personalised tour!

Out of hours

We offer appointments for telephone consultations each evening - Monday to Friday - which can be booked after speaking with one of our GPs so you can make an appointment that is most convenient to you.

Outside of normal surgery hours patients can contact the Out of Hours Service, NHS111 by dialling that number direct.

Additional information

We have a dedicated Appointment Cancellation Line 01480 483133. Callers will get straight through, no waiting or queueing, and can leave a message. It is very much appreciated when patients take the time to cancel their booked appointment if they can no longer make it or no longer need the appointment, so that these can be used for other patients.

Q. Do I have a GP that I am registered with?

A. All patients are registered with the Surgery rather than a single doctor so this gives patients the flexibility to see any doctor they wish - or to see a clinician with a skill in a specialist area. We believe this offers the best service to our patients. You can, of course, see the doctor of your choice and have a 'usual' doctor if you wish.

We offer a range of options to access our clinical staff including face-to-face consultations and bookable telephone consultations which patients can book themselves online or by contacting our Reception team. Email advice is also available.

PPG raises funds to enhance service to patients

The Acorn Patient Participation Group - renamed 'The Acorn Patient Team' in 2012 - continue to raise funds to purchase items of equipment to enhance patient care.  Most recently they have donated funds, rasied mainly from the sale of books in the waiting area, to buy a privacy screen for times when patients need to be treated 'on the spot', eg in situations of collapse.

We are happy to offer patients treatment of minor injuries which are often best dealt with in the Surgery rather than patients attending the A&E (casualty) department at the Hospital. Please note that if you have hurt yourself or have an injury (eg scald, minor burn, cut, graze, sprain, bruise, bite or sting) you can be treated promptly in the surgery. Telephone 01480 483100 for help.

Research has shown that most patients want to be more involved when it comes to making decisions about their healthcare. If you and your GP decide that you need to see a specialist for further treatment, you are able to choose where and when you see a specialist. Choose and Book is a service which uses an electronic booking system to chose where you want to receive your treatment. You can choose from at least four different hospitals. You can also choose the time and date of your first outpatient appointment. There are some situations where your choices may be limited. For example, if your condition requires urgent treatment, you will be sent to the hospital or clinic which can treat you most quickly. Also, not all hospitals are able to treat every condition, so again this may restrict your choice. If you wish, our secretary will be more than happy to assist you in making your first appointment - plesae just let your GP know when you have the discussion about your referral. Training Practice

In 2002 the Acorn Surgery was recognised as an Accredited Training Practice. Doctors who want to become GPs continue their post-graduate training with us and work at the practice as part of this training. Three of our GPs are fully accredited GP Trainers and two GPs are Associate Trainers. As part of their training, the junior doctors spend some time sitting in with the GP trainers during consultations and also see patients independently; they may also video their consultations with patient consent (details remain confidential). In addition, we also have medical, nursing, health visitor and pharmacy students. We appreciate your co-operation with this important aspect of their training, but understand if you would prefer not to be involved in this process. Please speak to a receptionist if you require further information.

The Practice have been offering extended hours since 2008.  Currently we offer appointments with a GP and Nurse on one evening per week until 8.30pm.  Priority for these appointments is genrally given to patients who find it difficult to attend during normal working hours.  Please enquire with our Reception Team which evening our clinics are being held as we rotate these to best suit the needs of our patients.

New Surgery Website

We have recently introduced a brand new webite - giving a fresh look and extended functions for the benefit of our patients.  You can still book online appointment, order your repeat medication and have access to a range of information on common illness and conditions, but the new website has easier to access options, including the facility to check the day and time of a booked appointmetn or to cancel or change an appointment direct.  You can sign up for our newsletter, complete surveys, join one of our patient groups, access our Facebook page or leave comments for us on Twitter.  We hope our patients enjoy this refreshed and modern look - any feedback welcome!

Our website has been updated (November 2013), giving a refreshed look and feel and offering extended functions as well as a range of information for patients and their carers.  It contains useful information on the treatment of minor illness, childhood diseases and action to take in emergency situations, as well as guidance on a range of medical conditions.  The Acorn Pharmacy, situated in the Oak Tree Centre adjacent to the Surgery, offer advice and treatment on a range of minor illnesses in support of patient care.

Widening access for our patients!

The surgery now has a Facebook page and Twitter account so that patients can have absolute up to date information and receive timely messages using social networking.  We have a young population registered at the Practice and believe that offering this kind of access supports our patients' needs more responsively and proactively.
