Cybersurgery in Newcastle

Cybersurgery on its way to the North East

Advanced new ‘cyber surgery’ is being introduced at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care to benefit patients in the North East and Cumbria affected by cancer, and who currently cannot be effectively treated with surgery or standard radiotherapy.

The £3 million system revolutionises treatment for a wide range of cancers by delivering extremely high doses of radiation with pin-point accuracy – without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Likened to removing a grape from the centre of an orange, without damaging the orange, the service will be available to patients across the North – from Berwick, across to North Cumbria and all the way down to Northallerton.

It was made possible by generous donations from the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, the Charlie Bear Cancer Appeal and the Newcastle Healthcare Charity which topped up Newcastle Hospitals own contribution of £1.8 million.

Sir John Hall, Patron of the Charlie Bear Cancer Appeal, launched the campaign to bring better radiotherapy treatment to the region.  “When I launched the cyber surgery appeal, I had every faith that our wonderful, generous North East public would come up trumps and deliver this amazing technology for the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. This collaborative approach, however, was beyond my wildest dreams. Bringing cyber surgery to the North East means we will have the very best treatment in this region and it will save and prolong lives”.
