Overview

We are pleased to let our patients know that we have installed a TV call system in the waiting room.  It both displays and says your name when the consulter is ready to see you. There is plentiful health information on the screen to educate patients and help pass the time you are in the waiting area.  The videos and screen displays are regularly updated by Danielle Wheeler as new health campaigns are introduced

Out of hours

When the surgery is closed please call 111 for advice.  You will be offered healthcare advice or directed to an out of hours provider such as Westcall.  Please be considerate of pressure on 999 and A & E - appropriate use would be choking, chest pain, suspected stroke, blacking out or blood loss.  For minor injuries, Royal Berkshire Hospital and Bracknell Urgent Care Centre will be open from 8am - 8pm daily.  They all have units that are open and there is a Walk-In Centre in Broad Street Mall in Reading.  You can help yourself by keeping a well stocked medicine cabinet and using the advice of your local pharmacists

Extended Hours - Saturday and Tuesday and Thursday late night opening

We provide extended hours for pre-bookable appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 7.30 pm.

On two Saturdays per month, we hold a morning clinic, between the hours of 0830 - 1130.  These clinics are for bookable appointments only. Please note that our phone lines will be closed.

Patient Access

Patient Access is a service that allows you to access your practice online. Patient Access includes a number of optional features, including: Checking, booking and cancelling appointments as well as checking your medication and ordering repeat medication.

Once registered, we provide the following:

  • To book, view, amend, cancel and print a limited number of appointments online.
  • To order online, view and print a list of your repeat prescriptions for drugs, medicines or appliances.
  • To view online, export or print summary information from your record relating to medications, test results, allergies and adverse reactions.

Choose the right option for Health Care

With the winter weather putting extra pressure on the NHS, Berkshire's Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are urging anyone feeling unwell or who has hurt themselves to look at the best option for treatment rather than going straight to A&E.

People are being encouraged to consider a range of options which include:

Emmer Green GP and Berkshire West CCG's Urgent Care Lead, Dr Andy Ciecierski said: "The cold weather causes an increase in the number of people who feel unwell so it is important that people only go to their local A&E if their complaint is serious to make sure the staff there are able to treat the people who most need their help."

Travel advice and Vaccination

Travel advice and vaccination is not an NHS core service; GP practices can elect to provide the service or not and some vaccinations will be chargeable. Patients will need to complete a questionnaire and book a travel consultation appointment with the nurse at least eight weeks before travelling.  This will allow time for the vaccination schedule to ensure they will offer protection.  We have a limited number of appointments available so please book well in advance.

Please complete the attached questionnaire and either email it to us or bring it to the surgery. Our nurse will then be in touch to organise an appointment.

Electronic Patient Records Statement of Intent

 IT/ELECTRONIC PATIENT RECORDS

STATEMENT OF INTENT FOR THE NEW WOKINGHAM ROAD SURGERY

 New contractual requirements came into force from 1st April 2014 requiring that GP practices should make available a statement of intent in relation to the following IT developments:-

  1.   Referral Management
  2.   Electronic Appointment Booking
  3.   On line Booking of repeat prescriptions
  4.   Summary Care Record
  5.   GP2GP transfers
  6.   Patient Access to records.

 Please find below details of the practice stance with regards to these developments:-

  • Referral management 

All practices must include the NHS Number as the primary identifier in all NHS clinical correspondence issued by the practice.

  • Electronic appointment booking

Practices are required to promote and offer the facility for all patients, who wish to, to book, view, amend, cancel and print appointments online.

We currently offer the facility for booking and cancelling appointments on- line.

  • Online booking of repeat prescriptions

Practices are required to promote and offer the facility for all patients, who wish to, to order online, view and print a list of their repeat prescriptions for necessary drugs, medicines or appliances.

We currently offer the facility for ordering repeat prescriptions on-line.

  • Interoperable records/Summary Care Record

Practices are required to enable successful automated uploads of any changes to a patient’s summary information, at least on a daily basis to the Summary Care record.

Having your Summary Care Record available will help anyone treating you without your full medical record.  They will have access to information about any medication you may be taking and any drugs that you have a recorded allergy or sensitivity to.

We are working with our system supplier and it is our intention to have this facility available to patients by 31st March 2015.

  •  GP2GP record transfers

There is a contractual requirement to utilise the GP2GP facility for the transfer of patient records between practices, when a patient registers or de-registers.

It is very important that you are registered with a doctor at all times.  If you leave your GP and register with a new GP, your medical records will be removed from your previous doctor and forwarded on to your new GP via NHS England.  It can take several weeks for your paper records to reach your new surgery.  With GP to GP record transfers, your electronic record is transferred to your new practice much sooner. 

Dr Chau Epw and Partners confirm that GP2GP transfers are already active and we send and receive patient records via this system.

  • Patient access to their GP record

Practices are required to promote and offer the facility for patients to view online, export or print any summary of information from their records relating to medications, allergies, adverse reactions and any other items/date such as ‘additional’ record elements which has been agreed between the contractor and the patient. 

We are working with our system supplier and it is our intention to have this facility available to patients by 31st March 2015.

You're up to four times likely to give up smoking with support, so  if you are motivated to stop and feel you would benefit from one to one support here at our surgery with our specially trained Smoking Cessation Advisor, Sheila Hutt, please phone reception on 01344 773418 and make an appointment in our Smoking Cessation Clinic which takes place on Wednesday afternoons (if this time is difficult for you, we will be happy to arrange an alternative appointment).

Caldicott

All NHS organisations are required to have a Caldicott Guardian whose role is to protect the confidentiality of patient and service-user information, and enable appropriate information sharing.

The Caldicott Guardian for New Wokingham Surgery is: Susan Vickers, Practice Manager.

The term Caldicott refers to a review commissioned by the Chief Medical Officer.  A review committee, under the chairmanship of Dame Fiona Caldicott, investigated ways in which patient information is used in the NHS.  The review committee also made a number of recommendations aimed at improving the way the NHS handles and protects patient information.

These are summarised by Seven Information Management Principles.

  1. Justify the purpose(s) of using confidential information.
  2. Only use it when absolutely necessary.
  3. Use the minimum that is required.
  4. Access should be on a strict need to know basis.
  5. Everyone must understand his or her responsibilities.
  6. Understand and comply with the law.
  7. The duty to share can be as important as the duty to protect patient confidentiality.

We e-mailed a questionnaire to 210 of our patients asking for their feedback on our service, particularly on the subject of accessing the surgery.  The results of the survey have been discussed amongst our Patients' Group and a plan formulated to improve and/or address any issues that have been raised.  A summary of the results is attached

Stop Smoking

Stop Smoking Day 2018 is held on March 14th.

If you are wanting to stop smoking please call reception to book an appointment with our Stop Smoking Cessation advisor- Sheila. Her sessions are held on a Wednesday but she will always move things about to see you at a time that is convenient to you. Whether you smoke 2 a day or 20 a day she can help you quit and start making the steps to living a healthier life style. You do not even need to be a registered patient to see her so do not let that stop you! Call reception today to get booked in.
