Welcome to the Junction Alkrington Surgery. We are a 2 site Practice with our main site being located on Grimshaw Lane, and our branch site being located at the Alkrington Health Centre. To view the NHS Choices page for our branch site, click onto the Contact tab and click the link located there.

There has been a doctors surgery at 346 Grimshaw Lane for over a hundred years. The previous partners were (as some of you will remember) Dr McHenry, Dr Wallace, Dr McKee and Dr McCrea. Dr Thomason replaced Dr McKee on his retirement in 1979 and Dr Martin started at the Practice in 1982.

In 1979 the Practice of two partners had a patient list of 5500 people. It employed one morning receptionist and one evening receptionist, plus a cleaner. The Junction and Alkrington Surgeries now have a patient list size of 8000 people and employ 31 members of staff, plus several locum doctors. Our doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, counsellors and receptionists all split their time between both sites (some work more at one than the other) whilst our admin staff are usually based at one location.

Improving GP Access

The Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group have developed an improving access to General Practice scheme which requires practices, working in partnership with Rochdale Health Alliance (the local GP federation) to implement changes which are intended to improve access.

In our GP practice the main changes will be that from Monday the 25th of October our main site (Junction) will be open from 8am to 6:30pm, and our branch site (Alkrington) will be open from 8am to 6pm. GP staff will be expected to navigate patient care to the most appropriate place (local surveys suggest that 20-25% of appointments would be better dealt with by another healthcare professional/NHS service). For more information, see the attached leaflet.
