About

WHFS (Women’s Health & Family Services) is a community health charity focused on health and empowerment issues for disadvantaged women and their families.

WHFS has been working in the London borough of Tower Hamlets, one of the most deprived areas in Britain, since 1981.  We work and campaign to tackle health inequalities and promote health education and equal access to healthcare, through volunteer-led health projects within local ethnic minority communities (in particular, the Bangladeshi, Somali, Vietnamese and Chinese communities) and, latterly, the eastern European and white communities.

Current health projects include our flagship Maternity Mates™ programme and FGM /C (Female Genital Mutilation /Cutting).  Please see the What We Do pages for full details on our current projects.

A key focus for WHFS has always been to empower women, as this has been shown to be the most effective route for building sustainable family and community health and wellbeing.  WHFS’s strength comes from its deep roots in local communities and our continued commitment to listen and respond to the needs of the communities, groups and people with whom we work.
