About
Alkaptonuria (AKU) is a rare, genetic disease causing severe, early-onset osteoarthritis. It can cause significant damage to the bones, cartilage and tissues of those affected.. The National Alkaptonuria Service is a free NHS Service open to patients over the age of 16 from England and Scotland, with a confirmed diagnosis of AKU. Patients from Ireland & Wales are able to apply for funding from their local healthcare provider to attend. The 3 – 4 day clinic offers expert advice, state-of-the-art imaging and access to an off-label drug, nitisinone. All patients taking nitisinone will be carefully monitored in the months following their clinic. Clinics are monthly, with patients expected to attend once a year. Further support is available via patient group, the AKU Society (www.akusociety.org)
